Firefox using too much memory

I noticed lately that after using firefox for some hours it is using a lot of memory, and running slower and slower. When I go to task manager it is not unusual to see FF having a memory usage of more than 200MB. Once it was using almost 450 MB.

I am wondering if anybody else has experienced the same problem. The extensions I have installed are the google, forecastfox, and web developer toolbar.

this is wierd. What version are you using? I am using 1.0.7, I suspected that it might have been one of the extensions might have been responsible, but you are having the same problem without having any extensions this would suggest that maybe the problem is with FF.

I just upgraded last week and I've been noticing the same thing. Also, if I had more than one FF browser open, it would start doing that thing with all of text where it would look ascii and weird and such. Finally had to restart windows to fix it, was slowing down the entire system.

It takes quite a bit compared to IE. But the quality and stuff makes it worthwhile. I suppose you do close the browser once in a while?

Well, when I start up FF the memory usage is "normal" as well. The problem is that if I have had it open for a couple of hours, then the memory usage has increased considerably.

No, I do not have any viruses/spyware. I just restored my OS installation. I restore my system at least once a month. I also don't download anything I don't trust. I don't do P2P as well. I keep the firewall and AV up-to-date as well. I have only had virus once and it was 4 years ago.

Unfortunately this is a common problem with Firefox and still hasn't been fixed. What you can try is to open up Task Manager when Firefox is running, right click on firefox in processes, then select "Set Affinity" and then deselet CPU1. I'm not sure if this will solve the problem but give it a go, I've read it somewhere before.

Firefox only peaks at 50mb sometimes for me, but it never gets out of control.

Sounds like a capital memory leak. Has anyone checked the Mozilla bug site to see if the devs have addressed it? Because if the memory leak is that bad, it can bring down more than the browser.

Also it can also be by design. Usually more memory = better performance. Just like with designing/modding for forums -- starve a forumware of server memory and it's performance tanks. Throw gigs at it, it's your best friend!

Don't use FF much, but if you're using Google a lot that also can be a problem -- especially with AJAX (which can eat through a stick of memory quick -- yeah page loads are fast for a reason). =:x

FireFox is creating far more problems than it is solving for me. I particularly hate the way it adds shadow onto the sides of random tables when the border-width is set to 1pt.
I've also found it fails to install updates and addon's when you tell it to, it just stays on the downloading page for as long as you leave it. This is the so called "future of browsers."

I had a huge memory problem with Firefox after installing the Google toolbar. Uninstalling fixed things right up. Try losing the Googlebar and see if it helps you.

I'm not familiar with the other extensions you have, but you can try removing those as well. Extensions have the ability to make Firefox run very slowly. It's easy enough to reinstall an extension once you've indentified that it's not the problem.
