 Agree!  With respect to "real signups", I can tell you that we regularly screen for obvious duplications with respect to E-mail and IP addresses, and certain other indicators. RJ has, and will continue to purge those accounts if warranted. Though we are growing by numbers, we hope that folks will post and participate in all that the Namepros "community" has to offer ... but we can't make them. The *infrastructure* can easily support the activity, and with ongoing site additions and enhancements continually being planned, I hope more of these folks will post and at least get "their toes wet". I know quite a few organizations where active participation is one of the prerequisits for continued membership. Why not have a member called Sergent-at-Arms or Forum-Janitor (hint, hint, Sohil) who goes around waking up those in deep sleep, checks their vitals to see they have not turned into dead-wood, gives 'em mouth-to-mouth CPR (scary) if needed and nudges them back into action. Kind of like how we go checking on neighbors when weather is real cold around here. | I am serious.  Actually, this little TLC approach works real well in peer-groups, non-profit community service organizations, including an international service organization that I have been actively involved with for many years. The Sergent-at-Arms is usually a nice, funny individual. (S)He has no real authorities, no stick other than a nice title but is trusted with the task of helping new members/lurkers into active participation. If people are not participating actively, or if someone stop participating, usually there is an underlying cause/discomfort what have you. Looking out for fellow domainers who are new or those aren't active anymore, and possibly addressing their concerns (if any) goes a long way toward community building. Kind of like how RJ went looking out for NamePopper. People stepped in, even renewed and back-ordered names that he would not have like to drop, etc. Sweet, honorable, and powerful for community building. ????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=7101 There are a lot of members on any fora who would be more active if someone goes an extra mile working with them one on one. The only place I would think this may not work would be in inherently hostile environment, kind of in a dog-eats-dog world!

| In it's most simple and community spirited way (aka the Namepopper situation) I couldn't agree more, however not everyone wants to actively participate all of the time. Some would rather remain in the background, especially in the initial stages, preferring to watch and listen and maybe learn. Sometimes such ones are chased away if they feel someone is trying to force them into becoming actively involved when they prefer not to be. |

I could not agree more. I think I hung out at another forum for a couple of months, just reading the posts, learning and absorbing the flow before I ever made a post. Even today while an active member of a number of forums I don't feel the necessity to post to every thread I read, there is already too much noise on some boards. Why add to it. | ||||

| We are on the same page here, Paul. Active participation does not equate to or call for participating in every thread. Far from it. I was talking about the value of closer interaction among the general membership. I have made some great contacts on this and other fora that has -in quite a few cases -also led to win-win transactions. Getting to know, sharing info with and learning from a fellow domainer, and posibly making a buck or two in the process could be fun. That's what I was driving at. |

Rather than it being necessarily a "call to post", it could be an invitation to post where and when one would feel comfortable ... after such a "Greeter" addressed any issues, concerns, etiquette one may have (which may be one reason why one did not wish to post, at least initially). We all stand to learn (more) and network from each other, all input and opinions are valued greatly ... these are some excellent suggestions, IMHO. Thanks.

| Actually, what I was trying to get at has the least do with "posting" frequency but everything to do with community building and improving active participation through fellowship. May be I didn't word it right. As I see it, a forum is what it's members make of it. A forum that has vibrant fellowship, and a good crosssection of it's membership actively participating is more likely to serve its members well than the one that has mostly passive dormant membership. I was not talking about arm-twisting, I was talking about extending a helping hand to a fellow member in a descrete, respected manner. |
