What kind of idiot bid on this?

I was just following around links, eventually got to an auction site, and I saw someone bid $85 for a penny. A penny, the thing that equals 1 cent. Someone bid $85 on it. Now I have heard that old coins are worth more but this doesn't make sence. I mean it's easially recognizable as a penny, it's got Abe Lincon on it and it looks like a penny. I can understand for those old coins that you have no clue what they are from the 1500's but this doesn't make sence.

I didn't save a link sorry, if I do happen to stumble across it again I will tell you.

I remember however it said that there was something about the coloring, it was a deep red they said, but I looked at it and it looked like the exact same color as a regular penny.

Maybe you were the person I was talking about unknowingly

I don't understand why coins are worth anything more then what the government says they're worth. If it's a nickle, no matter how much you paid for it it's not worth more then 5 cents.

I haven't bid on any - lol -
But have several collectors in the family - My uncle had some double-stamped run of the mill coins go for 10,000 +

There's a few penny's out there supposed to be worth millions .... But , if you're talking about Ebay ... Well .... Ahem .... I would bid a wooden nickel on there - lol -

It wasn't ebay, it was some small auction site. Not super small but no where near even close by any consideration as big as ebay.

I guess 'collecters' see something special in old stuff. They look at it from a different point of view, IMO.

I've never done that, in fact I've never spent any real money on domains at all. Just NP.

Here's a Lincoln penny on eBay for $5k buy-it-now
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...948608523&rd=1

Another that's at $700+ with 9 bidders
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...949731895&rd=1

Or this one for $89 might be in your price range
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...949857405&rd=1

Nice return on investment. I'm going to have to look through old penny jar.

When I was a guard at a bank we use to have a lady come in monthly and get like $100+ in pennies and she would bring them back after going through them looking for any that were worth anything.

Be surprised what you can find in the rolls of coins you get from a bank.

I don't see why they would have it at the bank mixxed in with a million other pennys if it was worth $500 but how long did it take her to sort through and find them (I doubt you would know unless you knew her personally but how long do you think).

Maybe I'll try that one day, I'll trade in for a bunch of pennies at the bank search through them, and even if I don't find any worth more then a cent I can go swim in my money
