Donkey OK But No "Hot Dogs" In Beijing For Olympics
BEIJING (Reuters) - Beijing has asked hotels and restaurants in the city to take dog meat off the menu for the duration of next month's Olympics and September's Paralympics.
Dog is eaten not only by the large Korean community in China's capital but is also popular in Yunnan and Guizhou restaurants.
A directive from the Beijing Food Safety Office issued last month ordered Olympic contractor hotels not to provide any dishes made with dog meat and said any canine material used in traditional medicated diets must be clearly labeled.
Concerned that canine dishes might offend animal rights groups and Western visitors, Beijing said restaurants expected to be popular among foreign visitors must stop serving dog meat "to respect the dining customs of different countries."
I'm a guy who will usually try to capture a bug and put it out of the house rather than kill it.. killed a big spider last night and felt bad about it!
I'm all for respecting other cultures.. I'd just prefer knowing what I'm eating if I order off a foreign menu. I watch Bizarre Foods on cable so I know there can be "nastiness" in there I may not wanna eat.
Aww Dave I would step over an ant rather then kill it but if its their culture and we are in their country should we say what goes... We would still have a choice to eat or not???
I agree.. I actually think it's kinda dumb for them to require it but I'm hoping the menus have english translations as well.
The "weirdest" thing I've ever eaten is whale meat.. very rich and tasty but these days I'd probably avoid it because I'd rather save whales, not eat them.
I have always wondered what dog tastes like, and have decided to go to a country where I can eat it at some point in the future. I ate horse in Sicily, so why not dog, or other animals?
