I just recently started having a problem with my computer. The computer starts but cant load windows. The computer freezes at the point before windows runs. I even trying using a windows xp pro (corp.) ms-dos start-up disk but it still doesnt start. AI even checked the ram and other parts of the computer but i still cant fix it. However, once every 40min that i try, i could get to the screen to run on safe mode but it stuck in the middle while running any scripts.... Does anyone here know to fix the problem???????
Much as Nick said I reinstalled but as you mentioned you cannot run in safe mode.
I ran into this as well trying to fix someones virus infested computer. After removing the viruses the windows files were no longer stable. There really didn't seem to be a good cure. I even tried installing a new boot file. So I know what you mean-you cannot run in safe mode:you can't do anything at all really.
I finally chose the following:
1)Take the hard disk out and install in another computer as a slave.
2)Copy and paste any personal files, photos etc. to the hardrive on the other computer.
3)Take out the drive and put it back.
4)Format and reinstall windows on the problem harddrive.
5)Transfer the saved files from the other computer.
With XP, this is a common thing happening sice the Windows 32. Virut domain ..
It seems more like a virus attack which has infected your boot files and runnable / loading files.
Get your system loaded with a different HDD and make this HDD clean,,,, CLEAN!!
If you do not have important data, get it formatted.
I had an extra HDD, I made the extra HDD the PRimary, installed XP and Norton and then scanned this infected drive.
If you can't run in Safe Mode, seems the only option is format, then re-install.. Windows system files are obviously corrupt. You'll need to start from scratch..
Next time your computer is up and running perfectly make a backup copy of your C: Disk with a program called Norton "Ghost". Anytime you have a problem with your computer, you just restore your "ghost". Works like magic. I've used it for at least 7-8 years. It's less than 1MByte in size and fits into a diskete.

if you can boot up your computer insafe mode just open start, chose "run" , cmd and once the command window is open type" sfc /scannow", it will reset your system files if they are corrupt...make sure you have your windows cd, even a simple restore cd should work......
what did you do before this happens?
you can clean it using one of the tools and run it on safe mode.
if everything else failed then re-install.
make sure you have a backup first.
Install linux into free space on the windows drive or other drive to reclaim your files.
Reformat the drive, repartition, use windows disk, and reinstall windows (and linux).
I guess, you need to check out if your hard disk is having problem with virus or bad sector. If you have a spare computer/hard disk, try to use the spare hard disk to confirm that the problem is not from the hard disk. Good luck.
