Thumbs down Sunbathing Teens Maimed By Train

It's incredible to me they didn't hear the train approach:

LEBANON, Maine – A freight train struck two teenage girls yesterday morning, severing limbs from each in a macabre accident at a popular spot used by youths for swimming and sunbathing in this New Hampshire border town.

Police said the two girls -- Rachel Brown, 14, and Destiny Phaneuf, 13, both of Lebanon -- apparently fell asleep as they were sunbathing on the tracks when the train hit them a little after 10:30 a.m., despite blowing its whistle. Both were taken by ambulance to Milton Elementary School and transported via helicopter to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where each was listed in critical condition last night.

Yeah, that's not far from me at all and people are abuzz and aghast here ... one lost her leg at the knee, and the other I believe will lose her entire foot (unsure which had the more traumatic head injury)!

School is still in session here, so it's unclear as to why they skipped yesterday ... AND exactly why they didn't hear - or feel - the train coming! It was not flying, or anything in that corridor.

Hopefully in some way, they will both get better and this will help to save others!

I've been standing right next to trains both fast and slow and you'd either have to be incredibly drunk and passed out or stone deaf not to hear it plus they tend to shake the tracks a bit.. certainly has me

Are they deaf or something?
You have to wonder about the intelligence of some people... Train tracks are generally not the best place to sunbathe, I'm sure the bit of ground right next to the tracks was just as good. I really have no sympathy for 'accidents' caused by utter stupidity.

I don't know know but I imagine there'd have to be more to this story.. seems to me they'd have to be dead drunk and passed out not to hear that train coming. Not to mention, I've never seen train tracks clean enough I'd want to throw a blanket down and sleep on them.. doesn't make the least amount of sense.

That's a possibility I hadn't considered. I have a co-worker that listens to hers full blast and it would take a small nuke to get her to hear you.

Looks like they weren't using headphones.

Maybe they were just those "depressed" emo kids and pretended to be asleep. This will probably now be a new trend for them. Trains are going to have a hard time in the near future.

So that let's that out..

I'd considered it might have been a suicide pact.. I'd rather smear Alpo on my face and tease a pitbull rather than tangle with a train.. but then, that's just me.

Well, so would I... especially considering pitbulls generally aren't people aggressive. With most of them, I'd have to worry more about being licked. My pitbull wouldn't even try that though. She knows better.

Yup it sounds like a suicide pact as well. Cause if it was a common place to sunbath and nothing hindered them hearing the train and or whistle cmon they had some death wish than. I grew up around tracks most of my youth. And we would lay our heads on the railing to listen to the vibrations of a train to see how close they were so we would know when to jump off. And let alone if they did not hear the heaviness of the train is enough to startle someone. If fact it would rumble our walls and windows when they passed in the middle of the night.

You will be suprised at how many people say they did not hear the train.

I have seen things like this on TV alot where they just dont hear it.

Crazy I know, but I guess you gotta spend time at the track to understand?

Maybe its common for people who live near train tracks to lose their sense of sound?
