Still, you pretty much need security software these days. Things can happen, even on trusted websites.
I use ZoneAlarm. I've been pretty happy, but I'd like to try out Kapersky at some point. AVG is a great free one, which I have used before.

Same as Tivo - nothing.
I used to have mcAfee and it did nothing, simply slowed down my system.
Been virus and spyware free for over 2 years now, and never bothered with internet security. I am simply careful about what i download and what pages i visit.
Linux and a router firewall. Nothing can get in or out unless I explicitely allow it. Of course, as the only way to get a virus for Linux is to find and download one, mark it as executable, and run it with root priviledges, that makes me pretty safe too.
So that means you are 24/7 in front of your computer? lol j/k....Don't be to over confident about the virus situation on linux...there are some out, watch it!!!!!...and....mark a virus as exe and run it with root????? that wouldn't prevent a virus or make it safe, would it??
Correct me if i am wrong.....
Cheers,
Frank
Dave, i am glad you stick with avast, don't you love the protection when it sees an exploit on a website? :-)
And plain old is always the best but these days you cannot be protective enough....
There are some viruses for Linux but none in the wild. This is to do with the permissions system (a user can only edit their own personal files), and the way executable files are treated (a file can only be executed after explicitely allowing it). Therefore, for a virus to be a real danger on Linux it would firstly need to be executable, and secondly need to be run by root, who has write access to everything. Running something as root requires entering the password at least once, at login, it depends on the type of authentication used. So, for a virus to do anything, there would have to be a very incompetent admin.
Someone said to me that Javascript is a vulnerability because that is foreign code executed without being explicitely allowed - but the simple solution to that is to not run your web browser as root.
I said that would make me pretty safe because the process to get a virus is so difficult, not that running a virus as root would make me safe :O
The only security software I use is Trend Micro Office Scan (get from school). It does everything and I am a "good" surfer so I don't think I need any other internet security software
