THIS is why I love Linux.

On a whim I decided to check if the TV-out port on my ATI graphics card worked. I doubted it, as in Windows I had to fiddle around with drivers and suchlike for it to even work half of the time. Well, I plugged the cable in, and it worked! Perfectly!

As a result I am now in the process of hacking my desktop computer from "super-technical-no-GUI Scary Linux Machine" to "wow-new-shiny-fast Home Entertainment Centre". I really wish I had a TV tuner card in that computer, but unfortunately I don't. So I'll be using it for movies and music mostly, maybe with a few good games (Lemmings!) installed also.

The only downside is that I can't use a monitor and a TV at the same time, Linux defaults to the monitor. This is not only no problem, but I'm sure the fix is almost as simple as getting the TV-out working.

Anyway, the main thing I love about Linux is that everything just works! On all combinations of hardware I have tried any distribution on, everything worked perfectly without having to install any drivers manually.

Well, i am glad you are happy with it but i want to share my recent Linux experience....I spent hours trying to install a simple HDD Partition Program...why have i spent hours you ask?

Because once i installed the program(what is time consuming itself with the couple commands you have to run) just to realize that the program is not working afterwards...because of missing dependencies...or this not installed or that not installed in the distro i run.. (and that was not the only prob what i had...in different Distries...)

My conclusion: Linux is not for the end user/regular user, still to difficult from a user point of view...If you have some time on your hands and not shy to do a lot of compiling it is the right OS for you, no question...

Don't get me wrong, i grew up with DOS (yes, i am THAT old) and i was using almost every OS out there so far, still do so...every OS has there + and - aspects....

Cheers,

Frank

P.S: don't let this Thread become a heated debate like"XP is better, Linux is better...no OSX is better)

:-)

Compiling? What distro were you using? Almost every distro has some form of package manager that downloads and installs dependencies for you.

that's great .. considering ATI is not really so nice with open source, until AMD bought them
