Making Money on the Net :(

Ive decided its finally time for me to get down to business and actually make some money on the internet to the point where it will support my Personal Pleasures. Whats ironic is for the past 2-3 years Ive always considered the internet as more of a pleasure thing since I really do enjoy working on websites and programming stuff since it gives me a sense of accomplishement and its really fun to read about someone praising something youve done on the internet. But for the sheer amount of time I spend on the internet (1-6 Hours a Day) I should be at least trying to turn this into something more. Well Ive come to the conclusion that if I was working at a fun company or easy job Id be getting about $5.60 an hour so my goal now is to earn, you quessed it $5.60 an hour. Im not sure how hard or easy it will be since honestly I only try to earn enough money off of the internet to pay for my servers, domains, and the occasional ebay purchase, but now is the crunch time. Ive started selling off alot of my "Floating" Domain assets in the NP Forum and Im beginning to work hard on developing existing websites.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/the-break-room/3734-making-money-on-the-net.html

Ill let you guys know how it goes since I plan on adding this into my "Book" If I ever make one lol.

Okay, Here is what Happened Day 1:

Day 1 7/30/03:
I began my first day of making money online by buying the domain Confederation.us. I then began to think of websites that made money online and the first one that came to mind was yahoo. And what was yahoo? A portal/network of websites. So thats what Ive begun creating Confederation.us into, a Portal of websites. Primarily small gaming sites that will combine to drive me to the top So far Ive already collected 7 Would be Webmasters and set them on their ways and already traffic today.

CONTINUED LATER.

Day 1 7/30/03 Continued:
Well I had hoped to gather traffic stats using C-Panel's subdomain stats service but it just happens that I was creating the websites as seperate websites instead of subdomains so now Im going to have to devise some new way to keep stats. Right now Im thinking of placing tracking code into the footer of every page so that not only will I get detailed stats, but Ill be able to display pop-up and banners.

Day 2 7/31/03:
Over the course of the night I began to develop my tracking code more in my head. By now Ive decided that instead of just simple tracking code for stats I want to have a network hub that displays all the latest news across the network. It didnt take long before I realized that I could just duplicate all the MySQL querys for every site and feed those into a Central DB at which point Ithey would scroll down the mainpage. The only downside is the extra load on MySQL, so I might have to think about an alternative like a Spider.

All those would-be-webmasters that Ive begin assisting in their websites are really beginning to weigh down on me. As much fun as it is to help someone make their first webpage, it really limits your time. Some of the webmasters are learning rapidly and I dont believe it will be long before they can be self-sufficient, others in the group are a bit slower and have barely touched their webpages which worries me since I really dont want to go through the hassle of deleted the webstie and DNS records, and then last of all their are those in the group using Dreamweaver and Frontpage and thats where even more of an added hassle comes in. Dreamweaver is the devil when it comes to new webmasters, It really limits the need to learn HTML and the fact is, if you want to become a sucessfuly webmaster you will need to know at least basic HTML. But I dont think it will be long before I can persaude these few webmasters to just use a text editor like me, Im using a few techniques to really make it more of a pain in the ass for them to use dreamweaver then to just do it like I do.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=3734

My server group that I started 2-3 Months ago is beginning to boom and already members are screaming for more space on the server. But alas since it was a non-profit server, there is no space left so now Im beginning my second server group which made me start thinking of the possibilities of starting a coalition of extremely discounted but reliable servers. The only downside to starting another server is the barrage of service requests I can expect, but owning your own server is such a good feeling that I wont mind the tech tickets, and they will die down eventually.

By now its really late in the day and Ive started to realize Ive neglected some of my personal websites in the rush of things. I quickly spent an hour updating the database scheme for my online game so that its operable, and then I spent an hour "attempting" to play a computer game, but lets just say I need ALOT more practice before I try to play online.

Day Three 8/1/03:
I woke up this morning feeling a bit groggy since I slept in way past normal and I hate to waste time on uneeded sleep. I began the day by checking my email looking for a template I had bartered for advertising. I was extremely dissapointed not to find the template since it meant more delays in launching my network. To add to the pain was a rejection letter from an ad company saying my site didnt meet their standards, yah I would think a 404 page might just not meet the requirements. I spent the next hour checking up on my online happenings and taking on a few small chores to help people out such as fixing some PHP Code, hopefully this will occupy me till mid-afternoon when I can check to see if I have my template yet.

Okay, its past 2:30 now so Im checking my mailbox again and I find that the template STILL isnt there, but what was there were several more support requests from these would-be-webmasters. I spend the next 30 minutes helping a couple of them with their websites. Im really starting to realize how much work a Network is too start when ALL of the webmasters are new. Im also getting a creeping fear that when most of these webmasters become more expierenced they might leave my network. Ill have to make sure that I keep in good contact with each one and "persaude" them to stay no matter how big each sub-site becomes.

8/1/03 CONTINUED:
I spent the better part of the afternoon trying to find some more hosting partners, results were so-so at best. Several of my NamePros.com auctions have finished up and I collected a good $400NP bucks or so for 4 domains. I feel sort of down that Ive basically wasted 3 domain registrations since the domains didnt do me a whole lot of good, but then again its valuable expierence NOT to register domains on the whim. But clearly this expierence hasnt done a whole lot to change my actions because already Im considering registering some more network domains. My confederation network idea is growing rapidly and Im already getting requests for free hosting for personal sites and such. Id rather keep my confederation network somewhat exclusive so Im beginning to ponder registering another network name, althrough I know that chances are with the current advertising market it will be a failed enterprise.

After a long day of Webmastering I ended with a movie, I watched Final Destination 2 which was pretty good, but not worth seeing in theatres so Im glad I rented it.

8/2/03:
I woke up today to good news, several more people had joined in on my server package and it looked like I might actually meet my goal of having the setver setup by the 8th of the month. But from there it went downhill, my template I had ordered a couple days ago STILL had not arrived in my mailbox and this meant yet more delays on launching my network. I also had only recieved one of my NP auction payments out of 5 to be collected. I think spent early afternoon persauding 2 more people to join the server and working on my online game. One bright spot in the blur of things was a free advertising offer by the webmaster of WorldOnlineGames.com and thats defintley something Ill take him up on. I still havent made much progress towards turning a large profit on the internet, but Im hoping Ill recieve my template tommorow at the latest so I can begin collecting advertisers and organizing the network. As of now my only Money Making Idea that seems to be working is my server and the profit on that will most likely be in the area of a Dismal $30 per month. But then again thats a small chunk in my goal of $500 a month, and you have to start small before you get big .

8/2/03:
I spent the next part of the afternoon mainly just surfing the web and keeping up contact with people interested in the server. I also began talks with someone online to consider partnering up for a banner exchange. If that doesnt pan out then Ill just finish a simple one Ive had in the works for a while. I finished the night out by working on my personal video website and skimming through two hours of video to find some good pictures, it was enjoyable, but not profit-making.

8/3/03:
I spent the better part of the morning at church since its been a while since Ive went. I came home and began work on my Network site since the template had finally arrived in my mail. I was sort of pissed that the person who cut the template used a particular method of slicing that made my workload about 4X as hard, but overall its looking Ausome for a cheap template. I was also able to make a fairly nice logo by combining parts of the original template and an old space game I ran. The new logo is also more compact so thats always a plus. I then spent the next Two hours cutting and pasting me template apart until it looked decent enough.

8/3/03: Continued
I spent the rest of the day fixing some bugs in my online game and trying to persaude some more people to join my hosting, Ive sort of hit a bump trying to go over the %50 mark.

8/4/03:
I woke up later in the day then usual so by the time I had finished my regular internet updates it was early afternoon. I spent the first few hours of my online time talking with other webmasters who were trying to hire me for contract work. I got a good laugh out of that since I happen to be looking for contract work on ScriptLance.com already and I cant possibly see myself taking on any more projects at the moment. Later in the afternoon I considered registering another domain for another network I dea I had, but I decided not to since the way the server was shaping up I might have to pay for 1/4 of the server the first month before it launches. That would really piss me off, but Id rather do that then have to start fresh. All I know is that as I went to bed the August 8th date of launch was looming ever closer.

Yah, but Im going to change it alot on print. Since to actually be worth anything im going to have to write up a guide on smart marketing techniques from my point of view, along with a anaylis on what happened over the course of the 30-days, and then Im going to have to edit everything. I figure it will be at least 60-Pages . Im just not sure wheter Im going to print it or do an ebook.

8/5/03:
I spent most of the 5th writing much needed code for my online game and expanding my webhosting realm. It seems now that everytime I go to Webhostingtalk.com that I end up desperatly "Needing" a server. Im not sure if its the low rates that cause dozens of new ideas to pop up so rapidly, but what I do know it is hard to find a good host there.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=3734

I also took on yet another website to add to my burden, but I think its one of my better moves of recent. I joined up with an aqquantice online who had discussed with me in the past opening a banner exchange. It seems they did code one and it is now up and running at AdvertBox.com, I talked with him and he was fine with letter me be a Co-Admin, lets just hope now that I can stop registering advertising domains once and for all.

8/6/03:
I woke up today at around 9:00AM and already by 9:30 I was feeling good. Waking up 3- Hours early is realy going to give me a production boost today or so I hope.

8/6/03: Continued.

8/6/03 CONTINUED:
Whoa the afternoon didnt exactly turn out the way I expected. I have taken on yet another project on the whim. Around 7ish I go the urge to code. Given as how I didnt want to faceoff with some bugs in my online game yet, I decided I wanted to code (Insert drr) ANOTHER ONLINE GAME to develop and sell, this being besides that fact that my own online game could use much improvement. Later on in the night I took on a second project for an online gaming league for a now defunct league, and it already looks like it will be an expensive and time consuming project. Later in the night I put the second online game idea off to the side so that I could assist the web-designer for the would-be-game in planning a partnership for a new online game. Already his concept sounds much more complicated then any onilne game Ive ever undertaken. I finished off the night making some more negotiations for some of my domains, yet no sales.

8/7/03:
I started off strong today collecting about $40 in payments for the upcoming server and invoicing some clients, I also began to work on the webpage for my new league it cost me a domain registration and hosting but the design is exactly what I was looking for, classy buy simple. But minutes before 11AM RIGHT as I was FTP'ing the new webpage up my connection failed, I spent the next EIGHT hours trying to fix my main ethernet connection and trying to keep calm. By 7PM I was able to get back online, but by then I had so many client requests backed up it took me hours to wade through them. I spent another hour making images for Gamerpub.com, hopefully Ill be able to start applying for press releases's soon since this touching up of the website is taking forever. I finished the night by programming some bugs out of my online game and trying to sell, sellgames.com.

Is confederation.us links like affiliate links? Does the site you link to have to link back? If not I would appreciate an extra site linking to www.vgcity.com

8/8/03:
Today was a really lousy day, not only was my morning filled with people failing to deliver on promises but some bugs arose in my online game and users droped %50 in one day. Compounding the problem was resurfacing a long-term project I had and finding that it was extremely rusty, its defintley something Ill have to get back to later. I literally spent the whole afternoon proramming upgrades for my online game league at mech.us, I really didnt consider the amount of workload it would take when I first decided to help out with the concept. I rounded out the evening trying to vie for some more customers for my server. I got two more which was nice, but only one payment came in for the day. Even worse was the upcoming payment day for my other server, I always get nervious having more then $150 in my paypal account at any time.
