fischermx is an unknown quantity at this point
My home office is soo noisy (How does the sound travel, anyway?).

So, I work from home many hours a day, or at least I try to.
But I also have three 5yo kids (yes, triplets, two girls and a boy) which are awfully noisy. The wife doesn't make it any easier. Not only they have a bold, high pitched voice (I hope they can use it for sing one day), but they also shout many times a day while playing or fighting. So, either happy or angry they're noisy. Their normal speech is already loud. I can hear them from the sidewalk as well when I'm getting home.
I talked to their teacher in the kinder garden and asked her if she thought it was normal they were so loud and she told me they were the quieter in their class .
I was hoping an interchange with two deaf mute cute girls, but they were already reserved for the next two years, by other desperate parents.

I have a little home-office in a room, which has a door, which I keep closed all the time. But I hear everybody like if they were behind of me.
My house is made with concrete blocks, not wood like in the USA. The door is metal filled by some wood and other isolator materials.

I tried by putting a sort of sealer on the door, made with foam. It reduced the noise like 5% at most

I tried headphones as well. The music could not cover their voices. Unless I crank it all, but then I can't concentrate because the music and sometimes I found me dancing in the corridor in underwear, and could not remember how I got there.
There are noise cancelling headphones. I have three sets... one for each kid. It makes it worse, now when they use it they have to speak LOUDER because they can't hear each other. I've tried other techniques, but none of them can keep the children quiet, regardless how hard and fast I throw the set to them, they always sort the hit out. The cord was too thin to keep them tied, it broke so easy.
I also tried using them myself, one above the other, but no matter how much sshshshsh sound they produced, they could not cancel the kids noises.
The last thing was pointing the speakers to the home stereo mic, so I could crank it up and told hush them at 150db, the result was a big "peeeeeeeee" noise that put me deaf a couple of days. On the bright side, it was not too bad.

Someone recommend me an attitude change. I thought it was a good idea. So, I gather the kids together and tried to explain the thing, but all started wrong when they asked "what's attitude"?

I've heard sometimes the dogs can be taken to the vet to surgery so they don't bark that loud. I suppose that's prohibited for the wife and children, even in Mexico.

Now, seriously, What do you recommend me to do? I need quiet to be productive !

SuperNanny

You sound like a perfect candidate for...... the SuperNanny!! Maybe you can submit your family to be on the show:

http://www.supernanny.us.com/

But seriously, maybe just watching it can give you pointers. My children are long since growth (my oldest daughter graduates from law school June 2, and is pregnant with the 3rd one!)

If you haven't watched the show, it will give you many many ideas to help "quiet them kids"! It will teach you how to give them chores, assignments, and even play games to keep them busy. Maybe before you go into your office, you could assign the job, or game for the day. Check out the "clips" on the website, and see if doesn't remind you of you house!

That really is a tough call. There are sound proofing materials that can be put on the walls, similar to sheet rock. Maybe insulating your office would help. What type of flooring do you have? Hardwood, carpet etc? Hardwoods, tiles, anything but carpet will make everything louder, as there is nothing to absorb the sound.

Kids are loud and to have three at the same loud age is difficult. They are old enough to understand what an inside voice and outside voice is. If your wife is at home with you, maybe she can try to work with the kids to remind them that you are working and that they need to quiet down a little.

I hope you can get things worked out so that you can be a little more productive.

fischer, I enjoyed reading your story. I can somewhat relate, as a work-at-home dad with three kids myself. They are all 5 years old and under, and each loud in their own way.

The best thing I could advise is to try to get as much done during the "quiet times" as possible. The noisy times of the day I would use to catch up on the forums or return emails. Not long ago I adopted the time between 11 PM and 3AM as the time I would get most of my important work done. Of course, staying up that late makes the mornings not so productive.

My two boys go to school now for a few hours in the day, which is good for my productivity. Do you kids go to school yet?

Good luck!

RJ

I can kind of relate - I have three younger brothers (albeit now they're 16, 13 and 11) and my dad's worked out of the house for a couple years now in a basement office, and it was always hard for me to get homework & whatnot done around here - but if you can stick it out for one more year (and the summer), won't they be in 1st grade and in school basically all day? And over the summer, why not stick them in a day camp type thing? They'll get worn out playing all day while you're working, and then when they come home (hopefully) they'll be so tired they won't bug you after dinner if you're still trying to work!

Together with the suggestions above there are two reasonably effective:

1 - Find or buy one noisy (???) fan. Yes, a small fan that makes a constant noise like the sound of turbines in an airplane. You can find it at WallMart, one of those small square fans combined with a heater (you should use only the ventilation, ok?!) about 25x25cm.

2 - You can buy a White Noise (??? again?) device that offer other smooth sounds like the sound of a large waterfall. Think of Niagara Falls. You can find one example here http://www.officeprivacy.com/Marpac...00_p/ds-600.htm

With one of the two above, and concentration, you can almost completely forget that any noise exist. And I have hyper-sensitivity for noise.
