If can reformat, choose the NTFS long format, If it get stucks halfway while reformating then your hardrive is gone :P

My laptop's harddrive is slowly dying, luckily I keep all my files/programs on my portable harddrive.
Let this be a lesson to you, Always Backup Data (if you don't already).

this could be because your windows became corrupted, could be due to virus, spyware etc. or perhaps you messed up the Master boot record
happened to me once too.
Hope reformatting solves the problem
good luck Robert

Stick it in another machine and see if you can browse it... if you can do that with laptop drives.

What do you mean, don't have the correct IDE device? The hard drive is the IDE device. You should be able to find a free IDE connection on one of the cables inside your other computer.

Most likely. If it is underwarrenty have them fix it and try and recover your files.
