Cool Pearl Harbor USS Astoria 1941

I got a big ole suitcase full of old newspapers at a flea market. inside was a letter dated March 2, 1941 USS Astoria Pearl Harbor from a navy man writing to his sister. He talked about going to see Mickey Rooney at Waikiki Beach. It was really unique holding and reading this letter. I wanted to share that with everyone. Now I'm searching to find out if I can donate this letter to some type of Navy History Museum or such. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Interesting.. I've had old letters and even diaries from the Civil War before.. it can be interesting to read from that viewpoint and share that person's views at the time.

I once had a fragment of wood from the deck of a Civil War frigate that was burned during that war (tho the details escape me now). We found it in a box of marbles with the details glued to the back of the wood.

To be honest, in my experience, unless the letters have historical or genealogical significance in some way, they might not be of much interest to a museum tho a collector may want them.

Fun reading in any case!

Contact the VA

A museum might not want the letter, but the relatives of both the sender and recipient might cherish having it. So I would contact your local VA and tell them what you have. Maybe the VA can run the sailor's name through its database and find him or his heirs in seconds.

You could even post the names and addresses of the parties here to see if any namepros members can track them down.

I also think you should track down his relatives.
Maybe give the info to a namepros member that is good at tracking down people. I don't think you should post the addresses to the public though, someone could still be living there.
