Paypal Virtual MasterCard

I decided to try out the Paypal virtual debit card, since my debit card expired and I didn't renew the new one, so they canceled it. It works great, although it only works in IE. I just wish it gave me my 1.5% cashback like my regular card did. Oh well, until it comes in the mail, it looks like I'll be paying virtually.

So, I know this has been posted before, but I just wanted to emphasize the fact that even if all you have is a Paypal account, you are no longer excluded from buying things that require a credit card.

It is a cool feature, but it's not a debit card replacement. For example, a lot of online stores require the CVV2 code which the virtual card doesn't have.

Sure it does, I just used it at Afternic to renew my membership. It put in a code.

Could you explain? I don't see how a credit card could be browser specific.

When you use the virtual debit card on Paypal it opens up a window that tells you to put in the url of the site you'll use the card on. It would never work for me in Firefox so I never could use it. It isn't until this thread that I realized why.

It's actually integrated into Internet Explorer now, much like Roboform. It recognizes when something is asking for a cc number, asks if you want to generate a number, and then fills in the forms.

What about when you recieve the physical card? Would you still need to use IE?

edit: Wait, is the "Virtual Card" different from the PayPal "Debit Card?"

Yes, they are different. The Debit Card is a physical card that you get cashback for using. The virtual card is a program that generates a random card number everytime to protect against fraud.

That isn't a bad thing. If I didn't have a debit and credit card I might try it.

We get the debit/mastercard in Canada, why not the "virtual" one?
What's the difference?

The virtual card is in the Beta stage right now. I'm sure it's just a matter of time before my neighbors in the North get it.

PayPal is working on something new with Mastercard as well! I'm not entirely sure of its release yet but I do know that it is going to be basically a replacement for your debit card. It will have all the numbers and codes as a real one! (Because that is what it will be, but it will use your PayPal account) It is supposed to link with your real credit card so you people don't steal your numbers to your real one!

EDIT: This is what RegFee was talking about!
