... And my Pc suddenly reboot :(

Nothing to do, this situation is going ahead since a long time now.
We've a Pentium 4 2800 with Win98SE installed and, at least one every 8/10 hours, the Pc suddenly reboots with no apparent reason.
Someone told me there's nothing to do because Win98 can't work on a so powerful machine but I don't agree with him because it works perfectly !

No idea on how permanently fix this problem ?
I've no virus/spyware/trojan, I'm sure of this considering McAfee is continually protecting my Pc and I scan it weekly with AdAware, SpyBot and a couple of other related softwares.

I'm a fun of Win98, no doubt ... and, the day I'll be forced to pass to a new verison, I'll keep forever one of my 2 Pcs with Win98 installed on it and with all my important files stored on it (without an Internet connection, of course).

Thanks for your suggestions, I'll ask a technician to take a look at it, at this point ... Better not risking, thanks again for helping.

Yesterday, my XP computer just restarted completely out of the blue, no warnings, no OK screens, just a restart, like I had accidentally plugged the computer in and out (which I didnt).

We've 512Ram installed (in origin, we purchased this Pc 3 months ago with 1024Ram but we removed the other 512, too many problems).
We've already 2 h.drives here and Win2000 is currently installed on the second one but I use it only to test new software while I'm usually on my loved 98

Hehe thanks guys but there're tons of differences between Win98 and Win2000, many things I don't like on the second one, a bit long to explain anything in details here ... At my own risk, I'll try to protect my privacy on Win98 with ZoneAlarm and few other softwares

How do you access the Event Viewer in Win XP? Can't find it in the index or on the menu.

i would upgrade seriously, microsoft are stopping support for 98 soon and more and more software companies are forgetting about windows 98

i can understand why you took out the other 512 (98 was only design to support a max of 512mb ram)

Thanks for the Event Viewer location Adam - Very helpful! I am seeing that at each crash point there are a series of 3 error messages - all related to True Vector Service (a component of the Zone Alarm firewall program). I'll note the 3 below in the order they appear. Do you know what would trigger these:

TrueVector engine: File "F:\WINDOWS\Internet Logs\IAMDB.RDB" was corrupt and has been copied to "F:\WINDOWS\Internet Logs\xDB37.tmp". File "F:\WINDOWS\Internet Logs\IAMDB.RDB" was corrupt and has been deleted.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/the-break-room/24737-and-my-pc-suddenly-reboot.html

TrueVector engine: File "F:\WINDOWS\Internet Logs\IAMDB.RDB" was corrupt, restoring from backup "F:\WINDOWS\Internet Logs\BACKUP.RDB".

TrueVector engine: File "F:\WINDOWS\Internet Logs\ANTEC.ldb" was corrupt and has been copied to "F:\WINDOWS\Internet Logs\xDB38.tmp". File "F:\WINDOWS\Internet Logs\ANTEC.ldb" was corrupt and has been deleted.

One other thing - I put in a new hard drive last weekend, so I was going to disconnect it and make the original drive (now a slave) the only drive on the system again to see if that stopped the crashes. When I pulled out the drive cage I noticed one side of the ribbon cable to the new drive was not fully seated. Pushed it in and restarted. Waiting to see if it crashes again. Of course the very first thing you should do when trouble shooting is make sure all cables and cards are connected securely, so naturally that is the last thingI checked!

Just ran for about two hours with no crashes then it locked again. Checked Event Viewer immediately upon reboot and it showed the same trio of errors above - so it looks like a software problem instead of hardware.

yeh making sure your hardware is connected properly alwasys helps usually tho if its not conencted properly it wont detect it but alwasy best to make sure

sounds like zone alarm is causing the corruption on those files which is causing the reboots as there probably being corrupted as the log is being accessed/written to

try uninstalling zone alarm and reinstalling to see if it helps at all

also run a scan disk/defrage

make sure the hard disk is in working order

the drive may have collected a few bad sectors which could be causing a few problems

also check your system temps (cpu /mobo)

Yeah a simple problem or missplaced file could be doing that.

Well all of those solutions struck out as well as a dozen others I have tried. I am ready to junk the whole computer. Unistalled Zone Alarm, still crashed, tried to separate hard drives, still crashed, tried a different video card - same story. I have lost more money in lost time than a new compuer would cost me so I guess I'll have to go that route. Just now got the net set back up after taking out the network cards. Must be a bad processor or motherboard.

When I had my computer shop
this mystery reboot came up often

Most of the time it was the CPU (hardware wise)
If you put a P4 in a old case
It might not be cooling right

Also since you changed the RAM
make sure the first stick is in the first RAM slot
bank 0 for some MBs or bank 1 for others

John

P.S. I am still using 98SE too

It's two 256MB sticks of Crucial PC2100 DDR RAM. Same sticks I've been using since Ibuilt it 2 years ago. Tried using one stick at a time to see if one might have gone bad but same problems. Unlikely both sticks ouwld have gone bad at exactly the same time especially since Crucial is very reliable memory. I have an AMD Athlon XP 1600+ processor. I found I can buy a new 2500+ processor, a new motherboard and video card (both a few steps up from what I have) all for $190. So I'll go that route. Already have a new hard drive and new power supply so that's all I need. When the new parts comes in I'll add them one at a time to this system to try to identify what is bad. Then I'll take the remaining good parts and build a second computer for my daughter.

I downloaded a memory testing program that was very good. Nothing wrong with the RAM. Just spent the whole evening last night replacing the motherboard and processor as I had eliminated just about everything else. Running stable since I got it back up last night. I bought a new 512MB stick of PC2700 DDR for this motherboard. I still have that 512MB of PC2100 left from the old board. The new one takes either but I am wondering how it would affect performance to mix PC2100 with PC2700 on the same system?

Well, I contemplated suicide for several days but decided it would be better to just buy new components once I felt confident software wasn't the problem.
