Katrina: Killer Dolphins On The Loose?

It may be the oddest tale to emerge from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Armed dolphins, trained by the US military to shoot terrorists and pinpoint spies underwater, may be missing in the Gulf of Mexico.

Experts who have studied the US navy's cetacean training exercises claim the 36 mammals could be carrying 'toxic dart' guns. Divers and surfers risk attack, they claim, from a species considered to be among the planet's smartest. The US navy admits it has been training dolphins for military purposes, but has refused to confirm that any are missing.

My roommate was in the Navy for 5 years and I read this story to him out loud and he said it's complete BS. The Navy DOES use dolphins for finding mines underwater but they definitely don't arm them with sedative darts, haha

Dolphins are very smart and can easily be trained;they are easyer to train the your average dog.
They could have been trained to shoot and stuff but do who would leave a loaded gun with the dolphin when they could accape because of the storm. I think the miltary would only give the gun to the dolphin when they were needed.
Just my 2 cents... I have done classes behind the scence at Sea World and have worked with dolphins.

Hes right, the government would not leave the guns on the dolphins. Anyone with some sort of a brain knows this. You dont leave the saddle on a horse, leash on a dog, or a gun on a dolphin.

Dr. Evil in austin powers has "fricken sharks with fricken lazers attached to their fricken heads". And suddenly, that seems less farfetched.

Is this some kind of unbelievably late april fools joke?

Actually I recall reading (in the 70's, I think) about dolphins being used in situations where they were trained to wear a harness with a magnetic bomb attached and they would attach them to ships in a harbor or port... training dolphins in warfare has been around a while.
