For Windows experts => Some problems to solve; please, help :)

I've a couple of doubts and I'm opened to any suggstion to solve them:

1- I'm thinking to buy a Pentium 4 2800 but I'd like to install Win98 SE on it; please, don't comment my choice because I've already heard many negative opinions in all computer shops I visited.
They say I might have several problems, Win98 might not work with an HD of 120Gb and might not reknow some peripherals ...
Considering I HATE Win 2000/XP & C. ... how may I attempt to solve, at least in part, my problem ? Any suggestion on new software and applications I might add to adequate it to a Pentium4 would be very appreciated, thanks.

2- A totally different and less serious problem.
I like storing various kinds of data and addresses by sharing them into multiple txt files so I'm looking for a second extension which would generate files similar to txt with icon of diff. color to store there "a second kind of data" and to avoid confusing them with the first kind.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/the-break-room/12482-windows-experts-some-problems-solve-please.html

I know my explanation is not very clear but an example might explain better the concept: even if inappropriate, I'm currently storing my data part in txt files and part in ini files (I opted for ini only because their icons have a diff. color). Is there another similar format with icons of diff. color to use in alternative to ini ? No matter what the main purpose of the other format should be, I can do what I want with it but I'd prefer avoiding to store my files in .ini

Thanks in advance for helping or, at least, for trying to be useful.

I will address the Win98 question. You will not have any problem running Win98 on that machine. Win98 will see a drive up to 2 terabytes theoretically. What i mean is that Win98 sits on a fat32 volume and with fat32 you can format a drive to 2 tera. Alot of people prefer win98 because it is simple and it does a good job for what it is.

About the files. there are several options just do some research on google you will find an answer.

Also as far as the applications and software, you will not have any problems with that either. Microsoft has a driver Architecture (WDA) which means that when a company creates a driver for windows it usually but in rare occasion not allways covers all of it's os's. NT,2000,98,xp.

The sales people will tell you that there may be a problem with this because it is to hard for them to provide you with 98. Infact it is not possible for many to. My suggestion is to buy the machine with a blank hard drive and do the 98 instalation yourself. The unit will come with driver cd's that will cover 98 to XP.

If you need more help pm me. i am allways glad to help.

You should really sometime try SuSe Linux,
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=12482
its very easy to install, and you can choose from several desktops i.e: KDE GNOME BLACKBOX etc.
SuSe does not have any problems with hardware, you can just download modules for specific hardware and it installs it itself.

Works great on my P4

Thanks for your detailed feedback dawg, you cleared in full my doubts and you helped a lot, thanks again, I'm more happy now

Thanks for your suggestion Rico but, even if I'm 100% sure to learn using Linux in few weeks of hard studies and testa and to be probably more than satisfied with it, I'm afraid many programs I'm currently using would be not supported and, in general, I'll have to work a lot to find supported software, this's the only problem

I know when I had my computer shop
I had a lot of requests to keep Win98
on the new machines

The people requesting this still had programs
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=12482
that were running in the Win98/DOS Environment

I would setup the new computer with their hard drive
or would transfer their OS and all files to a new hard drive

I would then setup the drivers for the components
for the new machine
(the drivers would come with the mother board and cards)
That way everything would Win98 ready

The best thing for you to do is get a barebones system
and move your stuff into the new system

Also you could just upgrade the mother board and
other items as needed... save some cash

Just some info John
