Can't get screen resolution to go higher on laptop

I just got a new laptop off ebay and the resolution is set to 1024x768, and I want to set it to a higher resolution, but its as high as it goes. It shows 2 options for display:

1. Toshiba Internal 1024x768 Panel on NVIDIA GeForce4 420 Go (Toshiba)
2. Default Monitor on NVIDIA GeForce4 420 Go (Toshiba)

Now, when I select #2, the resolution can go all the way up to 2048x1536, but when I select it and click Apply, nothing changes. Theres an option below that says 'Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor' and when I select that, the screen goes black like it's going to change something, but when it comes back on, it looks exactly the same.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/the-break-room/112721-cant-get-screen-resolution-go-higher.html

How can I get a higher resolution? The largeness of everything is making me crazy, lol.

Maybe that second option is for a second (external) monitor?

Try uninstalling both and re-installing your video card drivers.

click on the advanced button and look around. chances are that the actual monitor does not support a high resolution, while the video card does.

webmark is an unknown quantity at this point

That will be correct, most laptops ( tho not all ) will not display over roughly 1200x800. The higher resolution will be for an external monitor. Just A hardware limitation you will not be able to overcome.

Breast Cancer
your laptop is fixed at that resoltuion

with the monitor being a tft monitor you are limited physically by size of the screen
eg
15 inch is nativly 1024x768
17inch is nativly 1280x1024

etc with crt you dont have these restrictions.

the second video card is your vga output you have on the monitor. you will only be able to use that option if you hook a monitor up to your laptop
