I'm not sure about the rest of the extensions but good 4 letter .com's that aren't just random letters/numbers sell for low - mid XXX.

Even the old timers and experts wish we know that. It's pretty much like the stock market. The long term trend should be upward, but there may be downturns in between and the amount it goes up overall is unknown.

As more get developed, the remaining ones become more rare, and should go up in value. No different than collecting stamps, coins, antiques, or baseball cards in which there is a finite supply and growing demand.

Bye, got to go polish my crytal ball....

There may come a time when even a crap 4 letter name is worth $100. But I reckon you will have paid $101 in reg fees by then, so it's a bad investment. You do much better going for a reasonable 5 char that might mean something to someone.

Not counting number or hyphens, there are 17,576 possible combinations of three letter domains. Therefore, they are somewhat rare when you consider the number of companies who may use an acronym or peoples initials in the world. However, When you get to 4 letters, the possible combinations is 456,976 making them a lot less rare, and extremely less likely you'll pick one that someone actually wants.

If you take the chance on 4 letters, I'd stick to one or more of the following combos:
1. Pronouncable.
2. An actual word in some language, preferably one spoken by many with net access.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/short-domain-discussion/91952-4-letters.html
3. An acronym of some common term, phrase, or jargon.
4. Have the last letter end in something useful for someone who can't get a 3 letter: such as I for Inc., C for Company, A for Association, L for Limited, etc.

Be prepared to wait 3-5 years or more of renewals to find a buyer, and don't expect too much as far as price. You'd probably be better off spending your $8 reg fee on lottery tickets.

My crystal ball is not yet polished, but my magic 8-ball says "absolutely maybe, or maybe not".

There are plenty of 4 random-letter .com's available. Three-letter names are much harder to come by, random or not.

Why do n00bs that haven't sold a single quality domain feel obliged to post about subjects they have no grasp on?

Tell me how much COV*.com sold for. I won't reveal the final letter but it's a so-called "bad letter".

I suspect ... to keep us old fogies on our toes, IMHO.

Personally, I take a pass on any extensioned four-letter domains, unless they form a meaningful word or have some other obvious meaning, etc. I'm sure there are exceptions to this rule, as well.

Obviously, registering a boatload of 4-letter domains is not the wisest strategy. One has to find a niche market and stick to it - then exit quick if that market leads towards its end. I did the same thing with 3-char .com domains a few years back.

Let me give you a tip on 3-letter .in domains: a major player in the 3-letter .com acquisition game, has registered several hundred 3-letter .in domains - all from my generated list of available names. So the 3-letter market is still dominant.

Sounds reasonable to me.

Thanks for the tip ... who is the major player, and why - if you know - did he/she chose the ".IN" space specifically for these registrations? Appreciate it, I'm just getting up to speed here today.

Well it didn't get an “honourable mention” on DNJournal, so I guess it was $xxx or less, or perhaps so high the buyer was embarrassed and insisted on an NDA

There are thousands of 4-letter names becoming available everyday. I don't think it's a good idea to snap up 4-letter domains made up of random letters.

No one said you had to. It’s just that most sales of that sort of amount end up being listed there unless it’s all hush hush.
