![]() ![]() ![]() | Thanks for your thoughts guys! coreyg - I think in my day to day life I wouldn't always consider Y a vowel, but in the context of short domains it almost always seems to be regarded as one, because it makes names pronounceable instead of just an acronym |

pronounced as an `i ` Another way to look at it is if the homophone version either naturally occurring or not spelt with an `i` could also be spelt with a `y` instead and would have in turn the same phonetic pronunciation. examples: 'gym'→ 'gim' 'typical'→ 'tipical' 'mystery'→'mistery' 'lym'→'lim' ![]() .

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | When I created the CVCV button on my website, I spend a few hours researching and deciding what a CVCV is because of this Y issue. Then I came up with this definition: CVCV = CVCV + CVCY - CVYY In other words if the last letter is a Y it counts as a vowel, provided that the consonant before the Y is not a Y too. However the first vowel can't be a Y. My programmer converted this beautifully into code: 'cvcv' =>'^['.$c.']['.$v.'](['.$c.']['.$v.']|['.$c_no_y.']y)$', and that's what we have always used on our site. This way words like sony, pony, tony are covered by our CVCV definition.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | CVCV such as CVCY can be solid IMHO. CYCV not so much in the typical case.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | CYCV not much - CVCY depends on how repeatable and pronounceable it is. If it sounds good and looks good, it can do just as well as any good CVCV.
