Is "K" really a non-premium letter?

Fellow NP'ers,

I have been thinking about this since a while ago. The letter "K" is considered by many as a non-premium letter. Some even regard it a bad-letter when it comes to lll or llll domains.

But if you think about it, K is a hard consonant and has an advantage when it comes to making a short domain pronounceable. The consonant "F" is softer but it outpowers "K" when it comes to acronym possibilities...
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/short-domain-discussion/675949-is-k-really-non-premium-letter.html

Personally, I tend to think that a triple premium + K in a llll.com as a quad premium. I have come across a few domainers that think my way...and have met some that are reluctant to consider "K" as a premium letter.

Your feedback on this would be much appreciated.

Cheers!

All letters are premium in their specific market. e.g. Chinese, Russia.

I agree. Each country has its own set of standards for each letter. In my country there are a few people who'd do anything to get a k in front of everything (especially names) , as they consider it lucky. Similarly in other countries as well it holds some special value. So the "some" and "many" that you're talking about might be from a country which doesn't like k

For totally random letters sure some are better BUT at no point and time should your purchase decisions be based on random letters you DONT knwo before purchase...

Personally I think the debate is stupid. I think the debate shoudl come down to premium DOMAINS vs non-premium DOMAINS...

I have sold some really crappy domains IN fact my highest LLLL.com sales came on two domains, one with a "Z" and one with a "J"...

This is a long-standing debate. Originally the intent was to simplify - and since most of the internet was then in English the list was biased that way.

There are still variations in letter value, worldwide "S" is the most popular and "Q" is the least. Lists of $10 LLLL's are packed with Q,X and Z. (Those familiar with Chinese can find bargains there.)

"W" is the most popular of the semi-premiums, followed by "U" and "K" (then J,V,Y), yet triple premium LLLLs with "K" sold out long before those with U or W in the buy-out.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=675949

All letters have their uses somewhere, it really is about the odds that a particular domain can attract an end-user. Those odds are pretty low, regardless. Letter quality is one of several tools that can improve the odds.

I think K is pretty good, definitely the best letter out of the settled "non premium" letters.

domainers are the only people who discriminate against a letter.

which makes those who follow the quad, triple, double, single premium philosophy... "alphabet bigots"

they are close-minded people, who should be shunned.

they will try to apply their discriminatory practices and guidelines to your domains if you deal with them.

they will make every attempt to "devalue" your property and/or reduce your confidence in the domains you own based on the letters they label as non-premium.

wake up!

Repped. Big up, Biggie!

Absolutely true. It's just that the reported sales in general are usually low both in terms of number and price when it comes to so-called non-premium letters. I believe it has become a pattern that many of us are used to and let ourselves guided by!

K is not a premium letter in an LLL IMO, BUT, there are other factors you should consider before downplaying its role or worth in the domain name. Most of my lll.ins don't have K in them though, but i recently bought kou.in and i like it.

Hey another Chicago guy here.

Whenever I'm looking at short domains I think about the Scrabble letter value. The higher the value and the less number available tiles the harder it is to use in a word. So maybe when looking at short domains, add up the "Scrabble Score" to help determine value.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=675949

K is all by itself in the middle according to Scrabble, it isn't premium or non-premium.

1 point: E ×12, A ×9, I ×9, O ×8, N ×6, R ×6, T ×6, L ×4, S ×4, U ×4
2 points: D ×4, G ×3
3 points: B ×2, C ×2, M ×2, P ×2
4 points: F ×2, H ×2, V ×2, W ×2, Y ×2
5 points: K ×1
8 points: J ×1, X ×1
10 points: Q ×1, Z ×1

But yes, it's true. It all has to do with where the letters are than what the letters are.

You need to open up your mind! Valuing letters is so 2007! Pronouncable, flexible, memorable, usable, etc... the key to value is what can it be turned into. We all need to move forward on the Premium, Vs. Bad letter think. FYI Qwxq.com is for sale!!!

since the number of llll holders is large, I think the market is efficient: let the price determine if it is premium. If it sells high for a particular letter statistically, it will become premium. We should not argue over this with our own preference.

Non-premium or premium, K is important for me and my brother: Kaibo and Kaibin Huang, thus we love our domain http://Khuang.com when I was able to get just huang.com (which was regitered on 1997-05-26 )in 1996.

We just needed a K in our domain.

I was actually looking for one of such domains...Quad with the so-called bad letters! If you had a "Z" in that domain instead of the "W", I'd have made an offer. Want it all bad!

I personally think that it's all about your end-user buyers - they will be the one who decides what's more valuable and what's less valuable.

but eventually the more the domain name makes sense the more valuable it is - regardless the value of the letters on their own.

My opinion is it is all about the situation. non premium letters also can be included in a premium word. If there is a famous brand with 4 letters consisting a non-premium letter. That letter will simply get the value.

The thing is.. premium letter has more chance to make premium keyword than that of non-premium letters. It doesn't mean non-premium letter will never bring up a premium word. Premium is always premium

K is kinda special though...The consonant works well as fourth letter and makes an otherwise non-pronounceable domain a semi-/pronounceable...
