Google+'s Success and Failure, in Two Images

Google+'s Success and Failure, in Two Images

Is Google+ a success or a failure? It literally depends on how you look at it.

This morning, market researcher Compete released metrics showing that Google’s social network is skyrocketing in membership and usage, with nearly half the unique visitors of Twitter (though still trailing far behind Facebook):

Yet there’s a persistent perception that nobody’s on Google+, and those who are don’t really use it–except Google employees:

Google clearly needs to provide more apps and other features, and start doing more public relations outreach, as Web strategist Jeremiah Owyang advises. But I also have a feeling that millions of people doing whatever they want to do on Google+ will help solve that perception problem.

The big question will be where those users, more than Google itself, want to take the service. From my personal experience, it’s a good place to share content. But I’m not yet sure what else it will be, if anything. Branding vehicle? Maybe. A social hangout, as Google clearly hopes? Maybe. As much as Google’s efforts with Google+ are often belittled by the digerati, the surprise success of Pinterest shows that we users in the end will decide what works for us, and what doesn’t.
Any thoughts?

Peace,
Cyberian

Google's sort of strong-arming their way into being more popular by giving a lot of attention to G+ results in the SERPS...

This concerns me quite a bit. I am beginning to see a bubble in the Google scheme, not to highlight anything illegal or unethical that they do (which they do). Flooding the market with all of these free tools at the cost of advertising will catch up to them.

Back on topic...

The use of Google+ as a ranking factor adds to my concerns. I have yet to get an account because I do not see the value in it. Twitter, StumbleUpon, and Facebook (in that order) fulfill my social networking needs, both personal and business.

Will I get a Google+ account just to maybe rank a bit higher? Is it worth the privacy concerns and the time and effort? I think not. As far as I am concerned I still do not know anyone in real life who uses it.

To be as huge as they are , and have so many Intelligent people within their company ... Google has done some pretty stupid things IMO.
I never liked Myspace , but they turned down an offer to buy it when it was popular - just to turn around and pay much more 6 months down the road for Advertising space. To date buying youtube was their best idea IMO ... But I just don't see them getting a decent foothold on the whole "Social" thing. They've bought other Social sites in the past and it seems people stopped participating right after that.
BTW - I think the numbers are actually "stacked" , I don't recall ever signing up for PLUS itself but noticed I supposedly have an account (I think it was something within my Gmail account) ... Which tells me anyone with any Google Accounts pretty much has one.

Google has merged the concept of SEO in SMO by introducing Google +1 button.. This is not fair for Facebook, but good for users..

You missed the most important part of the question. Where does it succeed/fail? If you mean did it succeed in beating Facebook, well it hasn't, at least not yet. But if you mean just making and starting a name in the market, then yes.
