Use of meta descriptions for posts, categories, etc?

Hi all. Thanks in advance! While I know that meta descriptions remain a good thing for pages, are they really helpful for smaller bits such as blog posts and categories as far as seo?

Thanks!!

Descriptions don't DIRECTLY affect SEO - they are not used for rankings.

They're not absolutely necessary and even if you have a description there's no guarantee the search engines will use it - sometimes they pick other text they think is better.

What the description DOES do is influence click-through from a search results snippet. Your call if it's worth the effort to create them for those pages.

Description works for humans, not the robots which search. Though it is still important part of the human site.

It's indeed useful for ranking for your blog if you provide META description to all different post. It will be display in SERPs and a good post related description will boost your blog rankings.....

Since, at best, you'll be on a page of search results with 9 or more other websites, a well written description may bring the user to your site rather than one of the other available choices. Try it yourself. Do a search and ask yourself which sites you are likely to click through.

Meta tags are necessary because it can make a huge difference with regard to click through. If you are using wordpress as your blog platform there is a special plugin that can be used which is known as All In One SEO. It's very effective.
