Changing Folder Directory

Quick question, does the folder directory have any effect on the keywords (eg. you want to rank for testing servers but your folder is domain.com/somethingelse instead of domain.com/testing-servers

Then if you want to change folders and use a permanent redirect will all your link backs be lost?

Thanks in advance!

The url's will change so there will be an effect on your search engines ranking but with redirect there should not be any problem.

Also have a look at Google webmaster and see there what to do in case of redirects.

301 redirect is used to redirect the traffic and page rank of previous page. Use redirect into the old page and when Google spider crawl it they came to know that the whole traffic is now to send at this address. Not only back links but you also got the Page rank of previous page but this process takes some time and you can be loose some pr like old page has PR4 and you'll get the PR3 for the new address.

All parts of the URL (including folders and filenames) are among the 200 signals used to rank a page. Having a keyword in the folder name can help. It can also hurt if you overdo it! Using a keyword too many times can get you an overoptimization penalty.

If you 301 old to new - there's a tiny amount of link juice leakage even with a 301, but that will preserve most of it.
