Can a developed .us, .tv, etc. with high search engine keyword rankings such as news, sports, movies, etc. do well in the search engines? For example movies dot us.

In my newbie experience, .net and .org are the alternative choice if .com not available. I used .net extension and the SEO result sometimes can beat .com

Yes. The extention of the domain really doesn't make much difference in the search engines. The content of the site and the way it's optimized is much more important.

Just an additional information, my .net new domain ( about a week after my bought) on page # 1 google, with search term that related with 7,300,000 sites. Just curious, actually how to check the potential keyword?

Absolutely! There are some regional ranking aspects to look out for with ccTLDs if you are looking for international exposure but other than that it's about the keyword.

My site Insurance.us is on the first page of Google for Insurance News (for me anyway) in the US.

It is not possible to totally evaluate the potential of a keyword without trying out. Sometimes you will see tons of search volume using the Google keyword suggestion tool but end up with little traffic. But you will sure improve your business sense along the way when you create more sites.

As for the domain extensions, it doesn't really make a difference in the long run.

Your real example is really valuable learning.
Seems you are making much money from your example site, since in my opinion insurance is a high paying keyword.

Give me an inspiration the others extension besides .com, .net or .org
