After you submit a URL, how long does it take to be spidered...indexed?

By submitting an URL, do you mean submitting it to Google? I suggest you don't do that, the indexing will probably take forever. Instead, build links to your site, and let Google find your site through them. That way, you'll get indexed from a few hours to few days, depending on where you get your backlinks from.

Submitting to high PR sites like Digg, Reddit will get you indexed very soon. If you get a large number of high PR dofollow backlinks then it takes a few hours to get indexed.

In regards to your question, as stated above simply putting a couple of links on sites that allow dofollow backlinks should get you indexed in about a day or so. There is nothing wrong with submitting your site to get indexed but it will take a while. The best way is just get started on a link campaign.

It's also important to have a tidy site structure so that google indexes some of the deeper pages of your site

You meant after write an article or content ? Or after buy new domain? In case after buy new domain, usually 1-2 days my new domain will be indexed on google. ( I used wordpress CMS)

Unfortunately, for new posting take longer

It's depend on where you are putting your link , if you get link from pr 3 it crawl fast than pr 0 or #.
