How many meta tags for the Homepage

I am re-jigging my site and was wondering how many meta tags i should be using for the homepage.
At present i have 7.
Is this too many, too little?
The site covers quite a few topics, so i could list a lot more.
I'm looking at some of my competitors: Stock Quote Widgets, Web Services, and XML Data API's for websites - and they have a lot of tags.

Thanks for any advice

Having lots of it does decreases the weightage on the main keywords.

Normally meta keywords I wouldn't worry about. But if you are still gonna use it then use less. Just to stay away from keyword stuffing penalties.

You are talking about meta keywords? Or different tags in the head section?

Google and other SEs no longer use the meta keyword tag. Putting keywords in this tag will no longer help.
