Competitive vs Non Competitive market

Hi,

I was wondering if I could get some advice please?

The business I work for is starting up a new business that sell running equipment etc etc. Anyway the product we want to focus on selling is running shoes, however the running shoes market seems extremely competitive.

My question is, do you think it is better to compete in a market with high search volume but with high competition or one with not so high search vulume but lower competition?

The term running trainers does not have as much competition but the search vulume is 1/4 lower for the term running trainers than the term running shoes.

What does everyone think?

Thanks

i would first focus on a geographical area first. Say your home city or state / province then move on to the larger competition. This will give you time to build up your links for the larger competition while still getting local traffic.

I think, with all due respect, that you need to learn a little more about keywords ...

1) Nobody targets just one keyword for a website or business. Nobody.
2) What keyphrases do people use when they're sitting at the computer, credit card in hand, ready to buy? If you're selling online, THOSE are the terms to target.

If you're promoting a local "brick and mortar" business, then add local modifiers.

Work on building rankings for a lot of terms - you'll may have easier/earlier success with "trainers" and lower volume phrases, but that can help you build traction for related, more competitive terms.

I think that if you [your site] can provide excellent content/services to the users: one that is better than the content/services provided by the top in the Niche, then you can go with competitive niche/market.
