There are 20 Search Engine Optimization Tips, I hope it will good for SEO newbie

1. Write and submit articles to the article directories.

2. Leave comments on other people’s blogs with a backlink to your site.

3. Answer people’s questions on Yahoo! Answers - Home.

well yahoo answer will give you traffic rather than backlinks. Setup a 404 does not help your site to rank but
it will redirect the traffic to the correct place.

Also don't forget your on page optimization too, as they are also important eg the Title Tag, Proper use of heading tags, Meta tags, Anchor text, Relevant unique content etc

I think that the first SEO tip should be to: add Excellent and unique content in our sites

That will be a backlink but I think we cannot call it a quality backlink. You can see the number of links on each post and the PR of individual posts and we cannot use proper anchor text. Also, in most cases, the links do not come from relevant pages.

I think we cannot call this a SEO tip as links from Yahoo Answers are nofollowed. You can only get some direct traffic from YA, but YA will not help in SEO.

Yes, the content part is very important, but it takes time to get decent backlinks, so I think it's a combination of 'great content' + 'building backlinks'. A good mix of backlinks is important, a large number of regular backlinks (articles, social bookmarking, press release, blog reviews, forum posting...) + some backlinks from authority websites, related to your industry, and with PR4+

Don't forget that domain names also a part of SEO.
