Thank you for that handy link, I'm still learning about SEO, there's so much info on the subject out there. In the beginning I think it's best to stick to sources like Google, as you know you can trust the content. It's not always easy reading though, specially if you are a newbie. That leaves a niche in the market for many a flashy SEO tutor, but be warned, they are not necessarily reliable. Shark infested waters....

Anyway, that link led to me read about the robots.txt file, something I did not know about. I think it is important to enable all Google's free tools on your site. I don't know if it is co-incidental but I did not have any Google CRAWL on my sites until I did the following :

1. Used Google Adsense ads
2. Enabled Google's Webmaster Tools, a process that requires you placing a MetaTag on your website for Google to verify. (could one equate that to establishing a link between your website & Google???...)
3. Enabled Google Analytics, another process that requires you placing tracking code on your website for Google to track.

May not be flash but VERY useful TOOLS indeed!

Robots.txt is a useful tool - just keep in mind that it only works for "well mannered" bots who read it. This includes all the major search engines, but rogue bots like scrapers, e-mail address harvesters and hacker scripts ignore robots.txt (or they read it and deliberately investigate any resource that's disallowed). You have to deal with them through other means.

#1 = coincidence. Running Adsense definitely doesn't affect crawling for Google's main index. It has a separate bot (Mediapartners-Google) which evaluates your page content in order to target the ads.

They are tips how to make web site more comfortable for indexing and to crawl, not for getting first place in th google's SERP.

I would disagree... That depends on your market. I have seen Basic SEO take sites to the #1 position with out huge volume of links. It may not happen in youir markets, but it happens all the time for Geo-targeted websites.

Plastic Blaster, that is soooo true! I've done a little experiment (please bear in mind that I'm a newbie to the business).

I created a simple HTML landing page & meticiously applied the rules as set out by the Google SEO Guide. This simple page was indexed by Google in a couple of days. My fancy, purchased, Wordpress sites are a couple of months old, has traffic, but not indexed yet? Yeah, it does depend on the market, but you have to get indexed before you can dream of SERP.

Yes, there is a LOT of myth about SEO, you will never know who to trust, perhaps not even Google, who knows?? I go with Google (coined a new phrase?) because they are the biggest & the most successful, maybe stupid, I don't know. Let's face it, do any on us non-Google employees know? Trial & error, find something that works for your organic traffic market, or else pay for marketing.. who can afford to do that? Not me right now. I follow the philosophies of this guy a bit (not advertising), he makes quite a bit of sense I think.

Getting indexed is as simple as submitting your website to Google and or submitting an XML sitemap. There is no major wait.
