domain/url SEO questions

I recently purchased the domain "motvatechildren(.com)" and I am new to developing for SEO. What I was wondering is "how to motivate children" is a popular phrase. would it help with SEO if I made it:

howto.motivatechildren(.com)

or is

www.motivatechildren(.com) just as good.

Secondly I was thinking of setting the site up with folders that say for example "to learn"

Does it make a difference, whether the folder is (is one better then the other)

/tolearn/
/to-learn/

so I was thinking my sites urls would look like this

"howto.motivatechildren(.com)/to-learn/using-this-strategy.html"

I was wondering what would be the best way to make my urls SEO strong. As I am going to work on writing SEO articles next, and can't seem to find clear answers on making my urls strongest for SEO.

Thank you for any help.

The domain name doesn't matter much from a SEO point of view. You don't have to make subdomains for your site to rank better. It will do just okay without it. Making categories (folders) can help -- I wouldn't go for "to-learn", "to-sing" or "to-whatever". I'd go with "learning", "singing" and such. In short, I would avoid using dashes in category (folder) names.
Naming your pages' URL's should be in the manner you described. If the title of your page is "Give your child a gift", you should name your page "give-your-child-a-gift.EXT" (EXT = .html, .php or whatever).

To make a long story short, your URL should look like this: "http://www.motivatechildren.com/learning/give-your-child-a-gift.EXT".

My 2 cents.

If I had that domain I would have not created the subdomain name but would have went forward with the domain name itself. Without even worrying about the folder names and all. The onpage content has more weight then the URL itself.

motivatechildren.com will be fine. I would use the hyphenated out folders. Those things help, but it all comes down to links under your keywords from important sites (high PR). To rank high it all depends on what your competition is. I've found age with the same page title also helps.
