* Easy HTML navigation Good html, is html that accurately describes the information on the page. The look of the page should be handled by CSS in an external file.
* Keyword research
* Look after your code
* Get links, not broken links
* Build a sitemap
* Don't forget the technical stuff

I have been working to get the current company I work for as close to number one I can get. I have Taken us from being 2-3 pages deep in google to a first page result for an important key word for our company.

The goal for the company is top 3, while I will not settle till I am at #1.

Here are a few things I have done.

- Optimized our pages. Content is relevant to each page. For example, if it is a left hand widget page I am going to write about a left hand widget, not a right hand one

- Sitemap.

- Backlinks. Everyone knows this. I am submitting the site to 2-3 places per week. Its tough to find like sites for this biz, as most of them are our competitors. So I am selecting directories and such that I feel will benefit us.


I have not spent an money doing this. I do not feel you need to.

I also wanted to point out one big thing....DO NOT GIVE UP. Do not submit your site to 242312314243 directories for $19.99 and expect overnight results. Take your time and do it right.

It's going to be difficult to rank #1 for keywords like 'cnn' or 'viagra'. In any case, it's not about ranking for keywords but conversions. Find less competitive keywords that will bring you targeted traffic.

Outsourcing is not a bad idea as you will either need to do seo 'in-house' or outsource. Remember time is money. However you will still need to know seo so that you make the right outsourcing choices.
