So, I have a site, a directory type of site for local businesses.
I have been working on this site for a couple of weeks, and am about to the point where I want it to show up in search engines. The question is how?
I hear SEO (search engine optimization) said all of the time, but what exactly is it?

Remember I am a newb, you may have to explain things to me like a newb.
What is SEO?
How do I get my site to show up on search engines?

Get some backlinks. Very first thing is to put it in your signature here and it will get crawled.


It is a technique or a way that includes opimizing or making the page itself in a proper manner that the Search engines will understand it and place it in the perfect category where it belongs. This was for on page SEO. For Off page there are backlinks

Point # 1 get backlinks. Start by placing signatures on forums you visit. It will be enough to get your site crawled.

Yes meta tags are good. Keep it simple and understandable by humans.

It is a XML sitemap they upload from google webmaster account.

Links pointing to your site from other sites.
