"One suggestion is this is because forums are open to abuse from
compeitors and advertisers. Another is that forums are a place of
debate (argument?) and search engines are viewed as directories of
information, rather than debates."

i disagree..
i often find answers to my questions on forums ... so i think forums provide usefull information ...
to me it makes no sense ...

Agreed. I don't think this would be a wise move by Google. Sure, they want to be viewed as a directory of information, but they also cannot ignore their audience and I'm sure they get thousands of searches a day from people looking for forums. To remove them would be like saying "You won't find it on Google" to all these people, and that can't be good for their business.

i think it's just a rumour.. some forum sites are amongst the most heavily trafficked sites on the net.. they cant just drop them from the index. That's not possible....

this kind of makes sense
if i was google
i'd only index the first page of the forum
or forums (like namepros) who have SEO friendly topic titles
otherwise you get like: index.php?atc=asdfjasfdjaoiusdfhas8df9as8f92u348y9 8dsf
so you dont no what it is when u look on it on google

thats my view atleast
