Implementing Webmail System?

Hi,

I'm not sure if this is in the right section, I apologise in advance if it's misplaced. I'm looking for some information and help with setting up a webmail system for a website. Now I have no problem coding the actual mail interface, but where I'm stumped is with registration of POP3 accounts. So far I've been told to either set it up as a catch all and retrieve it all into a mysql db and then filter user accounts using mysql, and to create them in a mysql db and then use cron to schedule creation of accounts from the DB.

I could do the first option alright, but am concerned about the stability and security of such a system. Surely a MySQL DB is not a good idea for e-mail handling? Is the second option a possible solution? Are there other solutions out there? I don't want to outsource the mail to outblaze or everyone.net or the likes.

Thanks in advance,

J.

My pleasure :)

I also use DWMail myself (from http://www.dominion-web.com/products/dwmail/ ) since it's easy to install, and uses POP3/IMAP to check for email already existing on any server (basically like SquirrelMail or Horde does). On the other hand, HiveMail and SocketMail (non-pro) use a complete different mail system, and is not ideal for someone who just wants a better webmail system for their own personal use. SocketMail Pro is good, but harder to install and configure.

By the way, Bryan, to setup email on your website, all you need is a webhosting control panel like CPanel or Ensim or Plesk usually provided by your webhosting company. They usually come with a default webmail system like SquirrelMail (www.squirrelmail.org) and abilities to manage and control accounts. If you need to find a webhost company that supports these features, feel free to let me know we'll be glad to help you. :xf.love:
