Domain registration status: best method to determine

I've found myself needing to check a ton of domain names to see if they are properly registered (and configured but that is a different problem).

My problem is that I need to run this script against apache configurations containing in excess of 500 domains so doing whois queries and haphazardly parsing the non-standardized results would be intensive.

I know a few registrars offer reseller api's but I doubt that many of them would permit in excess of a 1000 queries per hour especially when I have little or no intention of using the account for actual domain sales.

Anyone have a better solution?
