What do you use?

I was asking around in the chat room, about what program I should use from programming. I thought you were to just bang out scripts with notepad, but I guess not. Does anybody know of good IDE's or anything else that will help me?

I use notepad2 for all of my coding.

It's just personal preference and what makes it easier or more comfortable for you to code.

PHP Designer 2007. Can't go wrong with that.

It's came a long way in the last few years.
All the good coders will recommend it too.

I personally use zend studio for php programming and visual studio 2005 for c++.

Your choice of editor will 100% depend upon what language you are programming in. Some people do use notepad or a similar program when editing but you can achieve a lot more with a decent ide. They can help with features such as auto complete and code highlighting. Good editors can also debug your code as well as inspect for example the content of variables etc at certain points through your code.

For those of us on a Mac, I've been happy with TextMate (and now also the new php-friendly version of PageSpinner).

I could never go back to coding on a PC. Stick with the Mac

TextWrangler on the Mac is free. It's the "lighter" version of BBEdit from the same company, but still a very capable editor. I used it for a long time until I switched to TextMate.

I believe that PageSpinner is fully-functional shareware, save a nag screen.

TextMate is a 30-day trial.

Seems the previously mentioned PHP Designer 2007 is kinda similar to it though, even though lacking in some areas by just reading their features (in the project and debugging areas, at least).

Depends on the language, but for most web based languages any regular editor will work fine. It will be only up to your preference.

Although that is true any editor will work. The added features of some of the mentioned editors are invaluable. For example I use zend studio which has an in built debugger (it can also work with subversion and cvs although it isn't the best at it). It can also be used to interface with Zend Platform (you can get a free license for developing) which can help pinpoint problems with your code (not just things like syntax errors etc, I mean with things like bottlenecks and help show sections of code that are taking too long to run). It can go to the extent of telling you exactly how long a single function took to run. If you did this programmatically you would be increasing the code significantly.
