Question SEO Friendly Links without htaccess?

Is it possible to get search engine friendly links without using a htaccess file. (i.e. index.php?a=xyz to xyz.html or whatever)

I am asking this as I have a dodgy webhost who don't let their customers use htaccess files. I Still have a 6 month contract with them so until january, i have to stick with them, which is why I am asking this question.

I know how to do it in htaccess, but I am not sure if it can be done elsewhere...

you with 1and1? They wouldn't let me do it, one of the reasons I switched.

When people tell you that "index.php?w=1&r=mode&register=true" is SEO unfriendly, they aren't being entirely truthful. OK, google dosen't favour them much, but I have had many websites with URLs like that which have got to the top of google. Have a look at these search results - http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=si...0&sa=N&filter=0 - bear in mind that my website has been different for almost 6 months now, and I am still getting traffic from those results (heaven only knows how...).

Another example is forums. You search for anything with the keyword "namepros" or something you will get a load of forum addresses. Google don't really mind practically.

Other than that, you won't find anything, unless your host has something installed that will do the same type of thing. Believe me, I have looked everywhere!

...not 1and1, WORSE!

I buy my domains from 1and1 at the moment, though will transfer across the pond when I have to renew or buy any new domains.

Thanks for your help!
