Complete Newbie Question

PHP or Apache. What's the difference? I'm just getting started with Mambo and I guess I need one or the other? Thanks for any help.

Wow, you really are a complete newbie!

Apache is the webserver software. PHP is a server-side, web-oriented programming language that runs on Apache.

Thanks both. Yeah, I've been sadly addicted to WYSIWYG. I need to do a little more though. So I'm spreading my wings - hopefully I won't plummet to my death.

Do I also need both to run Joomla?

Yes. Most CMS use PHP, MySQL and Apache. Some may have the option to use PostgreSQL or even MSSQL.

But in simple terms, yes. You need both to run Joomla and Mambo.

Good grief. I'm just trying to develop a nicer site than what I can do with WYSIWYG. I need to turn my home PC into a server? Geez. Considering I don't know a programming language (save simple html), and don't want to run a server out of my house, this is probably not the course for me.

if you have a host, you do not need to download/install either, as they already will have this on there server, all you would need to do is install mambo

No, the only reason you would ever need to download them, is if you wanted to install them on your own personal server that you would maintain, if you are using a host (buying hosting) then they will have this on there server, so there is no need for you to download them. Also, for mambo, you will not really be working on this on your computer like you do with hmtl editors, you will install it in your hosting web space, and work on it from there.

Ok, I'm not trying to set up my own server. I have Mambo downloaded, but how do I install it in your web hosting space?? As it is, it won't open or anything. Thanks for bearing with me!

My hosting is through 1&1.com. I don't see anything in the control panel to that effect.

okay, unzip the mambo file, and then upload all the files from the zip file to your webspace, and then follow the instructions for the install file.

Ok, I uploaded Mambo via WISE FTP. I can see it on the web server. $65,000 question is... what now?
