Best place to learn PHP? Where did YOU learn php?

Yep, I really want to learn how to code sites, and be able to make my own scripts like the ones found on HotScripts. I want to learn how to code my own sites... and I want you to tell me recommended places to learn it from. Of course, some MySQL could be included too. I know the very basics, and can do very slight editing on my own, but cannot build a script from scratch.

I'm not really looking for w3schools or something like that... I think, and many others I've heard from think, that their tutorials are terrible.

Do you know of any great places to learn php? Where did you learn to program in php?

There are two sites that I recommend. 1 is PHP Freaks, located at http://www.phpfreaks.com. The other site is PHP's actual website. Their manual is invaluable. Their site is at www.php.net.

PHP Freaks is great because there is a HUGE forum you can talk to hundreds of people, and search through thousands of discussions. They also have tons of tutorials, and also php scripts.

Have you also thought about purchasing a book or two? I would recommend going to your local Barnes and Noble, and reading through some books, get a feel for different styles, and buy the one that you feel will help teach you the most.

There's a book I've been really impressed with. Written by Larry Ullman, it's title is PHP For the World Wide Web 2nd edition. That ISBN is 0-321-24565-2.

I think books like this one, and resources like the forums and scripts that you can find at PHP Freaks are some of the best ways to learn.

hotscripts have tutorials on aswell, if you click on the language you wish to learn then down the page a bit it should say "Tips and Tutorials"

I learned from...my friend? Well, get some good books, not the PHP manual, something that is comprehensive, I can't remember the book I read, but it wasn't particularly good. I would also recommend you to look at examples, see what the standard coding style is, and copy them. And if you get stuck, no place better than here to post it!

That was the book I learnt from. I strongly recommend you get a book, it by far better then most tutorials and it is all bundled into one.

Also picking up a good basic-intermediate PHP book helps a lot too. "PHP By Example" by Toby Butzon is a good one. Also when you are following tutorials its good to check PHP.net to read up on all of the terminology and what not.

Thanks a lot for the help, guys! I will try out PHPfreaks, and also I am greatly concidering getting PHP For the World Wide Web, as two people have gave positive feedback on it

And yes, if I have questions about a code, I guess I'll just post it here. Only problem is, when a beginner starts learning something, he asks a LOT of questions...

I would recommend going to open source route. Look at code, read books, and make the connection as to what code does what action. Use php.net constantly (and if you don't have constant internet access, download the entire php manual) - http://www.php.net/function

I would suggest taking a little script of what you are looking to create & kind of go through the code... Eventually you will start to memorize & voila, you know PHP :-P

I've learned pretty much everything by looking at The PHP Manual and tons of example scripts. I knew C++ already so the syntax wasn't a big deal.
