To manage a forum, you don't need to know PHP or MySql unless you are wanting to develop modifications for it etc...but, just for a simple community, not much knowledge is required at all.

Not extensively, just know what it is, the real basics, how to login to sql, etc...nothing of importance.

Usually, your web host will manage all the php/sql for you, and installation should be a walk in the park. If something does turn up, you could be in deep doodoo if you don't know php/sql

You really need absolutely zero knowledge to run the forums. This means you wont be able to make any modifications of course...but this is still stuff you can learn along the way. I installed my first phpBB forums 4-5 years ago knowing next to nothing about PHP and MySQL...Now I consider myself above average to advanced with it

You'll learn what you need to know along the way

As far as this ^^
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/programming/150313-is-php-knowledge-necessary-start-forum.html

What you need to do is create the databases in your cPanel and just enter the information that the phpBB install asks you...As a matter of fact, most cPanels these days come with an automatic installer for phpBB forums so you dont even have to worry about creating a database at all

If you need some help with installing the forums, let me know - I can probably help you out

It is always good to have php knowledge or know someone with it when running any kind of phppowered website. If you run into any problems you want to fix them right now so if you got that knowledge you can or you can get your friend too for a small payment. It is not required by suggested.

Depends what software you use. If you now ASP get a ASP board is you know PHP get a PHP board if you know CGI/Perl go to hell (bad scripting language... nice when it works horrible when it doesn't) if you know VBScript/ColdFusion get a ColdFusion/VBScript forum.. If you don't know anything but HTML get PHP forum..

This is pretty much like asking if you need to know C++ for installing and playing games. As long as you dont want to change them, the answer is no.

If you're talking about developing your own forum software, then of course you need to know PHP & SQL.

PHP isn't needed for basic usage of any forum, unless you plan on modifying it. But like somebody stated before, it may be handy if you feel the need to edit something to your liking.

As others said, you don't need any PHP knowledge to start a forum. You do need to know how to upload files, using ftp commands, and following the instructions to install the forums. If cPanel comes with your hosting plan, then you can automatically create a forum within seconds!
