Java declining?

Is Java popularity recently declining? What's java mainly used for these days? I see more of C++ and PHP/mySQL out there.

If java's still that popular...where it is most often used?

:-/ Online games (mostly flash though now) and it's really good for programming a whole program just once that will run on Windows and Mac (And linux!)

Java is slow, and I don't see its popularity going up OR down. It runs slow and bogs down most computers a bit, so I would not recommend using it.

Java is used on:

http://runescape.com (a huge MMORPG, browser based)

Java is used for chats mostly though.

flash can be used for a chat, but its actually harder than a java chat. So http://digichat.com comes in place

But other than that... thats about it.

wow...I've been trying to learn java for the last year...without know what to do with it. Is Flash mainly used for online applications and "applets"?

Flash CAN be used for chats. Flash isnt really for games actually, people just figured out how to make games with flash. Flash is actually for designing websites. But it can be used for much more, the ONLY SECURE way to make "send score" is to make a c++ server and listen on a certian port, and let flash connect to it using the xml sockets. The server would also then check to make sure the correct browser type, and a good referer. Other than that flash isnt for games really... Its poor for games imo. The best way to make a game, learn c++.

There are lots of different types of java. Some are popular, some aren't. Personally I avoid it as much as possible, mainly because it's so slow. But sometimes this is simply not possible. There are a number of applications where the best implementations are in java, and some places where you just don't have an option such as J2ME.

I took two years of Java, but I feel like that the 6 months I've been tinkering with php/mysql, has been much more useful.
