ssh problem

Hello,
I am trying to install an ftp server via ssh and there is a problem compiling the file to install it. I use /opt/wu-ftpd-2.6.2/configure for the command and get this error:
checking build system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking host system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking target system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking for gcc... gcc
checking for C compiler default output... configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables

If anyone can help me with this, that would be great. Also, if anyone could tell me how to save in the text editor vi that would be great.

to save in vi you hit :w in command mode (esc)

I went to the forum, but i dont believe i have the same problem as them. This is a fresh install of Debian Linux from the 14th of August. I have only installed Xampp on the server, other than that it is new. If there is anyone else or another topic for debian, that would be great. (also, sorry about forgetting about putting the os in the first post.)

if it's debian, why dont you just get a ftpd with apt-get?
