What does it usually mean when software goes Gold?

I believe it means that the software is finished and the master cd is going to be reproduced and marketed. Basically, they are finished and it is going to be mass produced. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I always thought it had something to do with achieving a certain number of sales, like music albums, w/ platinum, etc. Not sure though.

Hmmm interesting, i know one example is that mybboard is in Rc stages and there 1.0 is MYBB Gold. Interesting.

Probably the publisher wants more money for the 'GOLD' version

With games on platforms such as the playstation, they go gold after a while when sales start to dry up. To entice people to buy the game who have not already it goes gold which is a cheaper price.
