Yahoo Beta...I am working on getting into it, however, they have not been able to approve me yet.
I am interested to know some better / other alternatives as well.

adbrite seemed to do a fantastic job of providing ads that had nothing to do with my content

Are you only looking for CPC? Or other good alternatives? If only looking for CPC, check out
http://www.bidvertiser.com I hear they have been getting better recently. If willing to check out other type of ads, AdToll.com (owned by a member of NP) seems like a great site, selling banner/text links might be worth trying out.

Apart from Adsense I've also tried Adengage (PPC). The advantage is that they will pay directly to your Paypal account, with a minimum payout of $20. The ads are pretty attractive too so you're bound to have a few clicks everyday. Adengage is good if you're just starting out.

Revenue PIlot is great. they do not accept proxy traffic. they do accept it on the site though. Adversal is good for pop-up/under traffic if you have a nice flowing proxy site with a lot of surfers.

If you can use yahoo & google, continue with them.
Otherwise try with Adbrite but only if you are forced.

Are the alternatives being suggested better than adsense, or just good alternatives?
Thanks.

If you have products that match their niches then Chitika is really good.
Also consider Widget Bucks, Kontera and Adbrite
