I'd be hesitant to trust any SEO company unless it had very good references. There are so many out there that just do nothing. But if a company had a good track record it wouldn't matter where they were.

When it comes to SEO, it's not worth risking the task to someone who just wants a quick buck, even if it means harming your website's rankings.

If you have a legal agreement signed with a certain company it doesn't really matter where they are based

Yah but how can you trust a company that uses PayPal or MO as their only payment option?

Look it's simple I like to cut up the work and outsource as much as I can, yet the companies that always approach us seem to only accept Money Orders or Paypal as thier only menthod of payment! Contract or no contract there is not much protection when you use a money order or paypal

What ? No protection with Paypal ? You gotta be kidding.

When you deal with overseas companies you need

Contract + Secure payment method ( paypal is one of the most secure payment methods there is) . You can always use a bank transfer, from your account to their account.

What does SEO have to do with "shady black market schemes"?

Asia is a big place. Are you saying you wouldn't trust Japan and Singapore?

I'm from Asia (see avatar), and many trust me because of my rep, usually via referrals from satisfied clients. IMHO, your advice (to take small steps) wisely applies when dealing with anyone you don't know online, irrespective of where they come from.

Actually, the worst case would be if you hired a truly incompetent SEO "company"; they could get your site permanently banned from search engines, maybe even get you onto SPEWS (spam lists), causing ISPs to drop your emails half the time.

Your comment is true that taking small steps with anyone your dealing with online...I was replying to food consult's post as he said "one based in Asia" when I said take small steps with Asian companies except ones that are well known I did not mean every company in Asia is shady I simply said that Asia is well know for it's black market which it is..as a matter of fact it is the biggest black market in the world...now saying that I never said don't deal with people from Asia because they are all shady....
