ridiculous! not everything google touches is gold... they just touch a lot of stuff. not sure how well knol will do though, so far it's mainly centered around health/medical articles and the navigation is a tad horrendous imo.
Alexa rank at #2 (same as Google) - there's not much sites that you can place your articles on that has anything close to the top 5 of Alexa. It's all about the traffic.
I guess it wouldn't hurt to try it. I bet in the future we see "Knol Results" when doing search queries much like how they are including youtube thumbnails, google images, google news, google books, etc. If their intention was to build a competitor for wikipedia i think they will fall short IMO.

will be interesting to see on this, not sure if I agree also on everything google touches turns to gold, but they are getting so big these days anything new is guaranted huge traffic no matter what and I think they are trying everything that they can not either buy out or take over just to close the market further.
