Social Bookmarking! Ever heard of that? Did your ever came across a site where there is a link at the bottom asking you if you want to bookmark it? If the answer is yes, you should have notice that social bookmarking is becoming a ‘trend’. And people has been bookmarking and sharing their bookmarks at several social bookmarking sites, instead of saving as “favorites” in their computer.

Social bookmarking is about sharing bookmarks with other users online. It works the same way as the “favorites” which is shortcut located at your internet explorer that allows you to save website as your favorites and allow you to easily get back to the site whenever you want to. Social bookmarking site does the same way but went further than that It not only allows you to save your bookmarks online, but also allows you to share your interesting bookmarks to other user online. In addition, it allows you to know more about others’ bookmarks. If you are a marketer, then social bookmarking site could be useful to you. You can gain traffic for free, as you know social bookmarking sites is getting more popular among online users, any links submitted to them could get a huge exposure. This could definitely help in driving traffic to your site. Therefore, is not surprising to see find some bookmarks promoting and with many advertisement there to promote sales.

However, marketer should not put in too much time and effort into the social bookmarking even if you are tight on marketing budget. Though social bookmarking sites can be a good way to market and in driving some traffic, never forget other way of advertising and or any marketing campaigns. You can gain more traffic by using different methods of marketing ways at the same time than concentrating on just one method. In addition, you can eventually see which marketing method works well for you by seeing where the traffic is coming from. Lastly, content of a site is important too, useful and interesting, that’s the way to drive more traffic.

I personally find social bookmarks more effective than directories so they are definitely here to stay.

The quality ones are here to stay, that's for sure. However, the web gets flooded with new social bookmarking sites every day which have nothing new/different to offer. In my opinion, to succeed in that game is to have something that's different and attractive. Making another Digg or Reddit isn't the way.

I have used Digg to effectively build the traffic on my new blog over the last month or so. I write an article every few days and submit something new once a week to Digg and it has worked very well so far. I agree that new social sites will have to stand out to get the attention that the established ones do now. However, I will take any traffic that any and all generate for my sites as they grow.

Try posting comments on related blogs and sites. Also talk to the owners of these blogs and websites and ask to get a link placed on their site. This can help bring others to your site.
