Good info. I've just started am having a hard time.....I've done everything on your list except submit articles. Im not getting any hits. I honestly don't think I'm doing this right. If you have any auggestions (exactly ver betum) please let me know!
traffic from stumbleupon is easy to get but it is quite useless. I can easily get 500 uniques to a page from stumble but that traffic would NOT convert to anything - the waste of bandwidth... IMHO
All situations are different... I wouldn't say "useless", but Stumble traffic isn't worth as much as targeted. I do get some conversions and it takes a lot less effort to get the traffic too. Should definitely not be the main marketing plan though.
If your site is put on the right category, the content is attractive, and you can generate a few thumbs-ups, then you could potentially get to the high 100's within the first 48 hours. This is my experience with a relevant site, the first time I stumbled it (one stumble = answer to your question). I did wait until I had a pretty attractive piece of content before I did this. In my case, my site was a .org where I have a public domain ecology type project, it has no advertisement. But, commercial sites are encouraged by stumbleupon as long as their content is the right kind of content for the category.
create a banner exchange for your niche website content and direct overflow traffic to your site.
spend all efforts getting your exchange productive. watch visitors and $$ skyrocket. It is relatively easier to get 25-50 high quality + high traffic sites in the exchange than it is to get 2000+ uniques / day
I have better success on stumbleupon with humor content than most other topics. Humor is an easy category in which to attract visitors, but harder to monetize.

Random and unique traffic is good to any site but getting targeted traffic is what makes the difference. This kind of traffic yields the highest conversion which would determine your site's success.
Given a budget, I would always opt for PPC. PPC is a very effective way of getting targeted traffic given the proper treatment. Identify your niche and select the market you want to cater to and start from there. Research also on the keywords your desired market would most likely be looking for. IMO, one should be more focused on getting targeted traffic than just page views. Buying targetted link backs are also effective at getting targeted traffic.
Another great way of targetting your desired audience is through forum posting on similar niche with your link on your signature. What I like about forum posting is that it is totally free.
Your content will always be a factor to be considered. Getting traffic is just the initial phase, making the conversion from your traffic will depend on how well you match your visitors' needs
So if i run an incentive for people to stumble my site for NP$ (like i've seen other do), would that be likely to increase my traffic. Or do I need thumbs up? Should I get everybody to stumble the same page?
On the short term, yes, you get a burst of people. On the long term, that is to be seen (as impact on the way search engines register this information). If the site is in the right category, and the content is right, you will get some of the organic (not you NP campaign) visitors to give you thumbs up. If your site is not attractive or perceived as spam, those same organic visitors will give you many thumbs down and create a negative effect.
No it's not based on anything. I've spent the last 3 months or so learning php and MySQL and coding it from scratch. I still have a lot more ideas and features to add and I wasn't sure that a CMS was flexible enough to do everything that I wanted to do in the way I wanted to do it.
The hardest part of all has been the layout/graphics. I've had 4 completely different layouts so far. This one is the best, which I only finished last week.
If I might add one more... buy good domains that are directly relevant to your site or interior pages of your site and point them to the most appropriate page.
If you own xyzwidgets.com, buy xyzwidgetsales.com or xyzwidgetblog.com and others with keywords that are a good fit. You might not get much traffic from them but when you do get type in traffic, the visitors will have typed in the domain therefore making them pre-qualified leads who are ready to buy or use your site in some way.
craigslist works awesome when i need my domain to be indexed in SE quickly. takes about 3-4 days and you can see your brand new domain in yahoo. For that purposes also backpages.com working great!

Do you post an actual ad? I've never posted anything on craiglist so this is really interesting.
Very cool thread, I'm working on a couple of projects and I'm not quite there yet with SEO so I've not published them yet. Anyone here know of a WebCEO forum or thread at NP? Or is anybody using it?
