It'd be great if Ebay cleaned up there domain name auction business, making it more legit looking. You can bid $1,000,000 for peopleofcolor.tv right now! What are you waiting for!
Seriously, if they cleaned it up, it'd be nice. Have any of you had alot of success selling on Ebay? Did it miss your expectations or beat them?
I've never tried, and wouldn't attempt ... under the present structure, IMHO. Mainly due to the "legitimacy" concerns you've highlighted.
Good Luck with your research.
If you casually glance at their domain name completed auctions, you realize they probably only sell 1% of the domain names listed.
I own a sports collectibles/baseball card business on Ebay and in alot of categories, I see 100% of the listed items sold. What's the difference?
Credibility, unprofessionalism on the part of alot of sellers, and a lack of good categories are some of the culprits. The million dollar junk names get stuck with the $200 winners. They could hire a few consultants, get new categories, better promote the industry and they could capture a nice share of the after market. $200,000 lamborghini's sell on there. Why not quality domains?
Ebay is not a good place for sellers actually expecting to get a decent price for a domain. But a buyer can occasionally pick up a deal. I'm going to try an experiment this week using ebay, but I'm going to use it as an independent promotional device. I'll post on the forum here with a link and see what happens. I'll actually be listing some tier 1 infos, and not expect them to sell. Don't know if the exposure will be good or bad, but I'll sure find out.
I know several NP users that have had a fair amount of success with ebay.
It all depends on the name.
I personally don't use ebay as a domain sales platform.
Cheers!
I agree with "some" NP apraisals....however, alot fo the apraisals seem to come from the heart, which, I have no problem with...BUT...
They are that persons "Opinions"
Lets be honest here, E-Bay, whether we like it or not, have a HUFE aduiance. Bottom line.
Therefore, seeling domain names, should be an easy practice....If u "know" what the buying public want.
For example,.....Nokia Gaming . com
Now, I rekon I could make $50+ at lest on that domain. Because certain people would see it as an oppertunity. The point here being the "sales" aspect of it. If you word it right, you'll get the cash. Granted, $50 is nothing to shout about...however, if it cost u nothing, or $8.88 for reg fee, you cant complain.!
I say go for it...some of the shit i see on there...If half decent domains were sold, I think the "biding! public would buy into it big time!. It ouwld be nice tosee some "good" domains, other than...$10,000 getrichquick.com ....... I mean, comeon.....people wised up to that shit along time ago.
So, for an experiment, just for a crack at $8.88 , I'm gunna put socrazy.com up there... (Pnce E-Bay accept my fkin CC details and bnk details... *sigh*
I think there is a good business offer there for REAL domains.......personally
Anyways, 'm rambling.... Laters all...Just my opinion

i think ebay is not a good place to sell domain.
If an end user want to buy a domain, he will not go ebay to buy.
Most people buy domain from ebay are reseller themselves when they put up auction and also browse through which domain is worth to buy.
Therefore if it is domain reseller going to buy domain, he will not spend alot of bidding some crappy domain.

Look at some of the domains we sell www.NeonHQ.com/domainlist.php
only thing wrong with ebay is you have ignorant people selling 4 word domains for 1 million dollars. Its crazy but if you know how to properly appraise you will get a bid.
I have had reasonably good results whenever I listed a name at eBay.
I think I have sold 5 or 6 names through eBay in the last few months. Only one name I listed there didn't sell. (But I eventually found a buyer anyway through direct contact.)
eBay has great exposure, that's for sure. You see lots of poor names with ridiculous prices there that will never sell. But then again, that only makes "good names" stand out from the rest.
We have to accept that eBay shoppers are looking for bargains. And chances are, we won't see too many 4 or 5 figure sales.
Still, as someone pointed out, even a $50 offer is a profit if your name is registered at $8.
I think SY4 said it best:
That would be nice!
For example, I have a name on eBay right now. It hasn't reached the reserve I set but with 8 hours left on the clock, I have had 18 bids and counter shows 250 hits. Not too shabby even if I don't end up selling the name immediately.
eBay is Not a good place for domain trades, whether buying OR selling.
