.web?

I was reading on some forum, and a poster said something about the tld .web. I dont recall if he said icann is considering it, or he may have been saying that it would be a good tld. In reality, is there anything to hint that a .web extension is in the works? Thanks

There is not one currently under consideration by ICANN. I believe there is/was an alternate root provider offering one at this time. One was proposed in the last round of gTLD's in 2000, but wasn't approved. I would almost bet it's resubmitted in the next gTLD proposal acceptance to happen later this year or next.

Here's what was submitted in 2000:

I wouldn't want a subdomain and have to pay for it. That's crazy!

On whois.sc, the way they show it, they make it look like a TLD, but actually it is a subdomain of web.com: yourname.web.com.

ahhhh.... i cann is now going crazy approving FAR too many extentions... they should have only kept with the ones they already had... i mean a nic.i or a nic.air is just pathetic!

To me the worse of all is nic.i , a single char extention

I am sure much more extentions will be coming soon, who knows maybe they will allow Cutom extentions very easily in the future. so you guys can buy nic.domain4u

Oh dear, .web sounds like an obvious, yet totally stupid idea for a TLD. I think it'd be a huge hit for a few weeks, and then it'll drop to the bottom. It's a neat idea, but it doesn't really have any special uses.

I'm not a fan of any of the new extensions, with the exception maybe of .info. From a reseller's point of view I think they are dragging down the value of strong extensions such as .com and .net. Sure you can pick up premium names (see my available .bz names and you'll see upgrade.bz and mp3player.bz are both available, or at least they were when i posted)...but at the end of the day you won't make much off them, and any .com's you have will only devalue.

The only one I'm in favour of is .xxx as I believe it is the only new TLD that could be a success.

Just my three cents,
J.

the problem with new extentions is its very hard to get well known and people used to them., most strong sites already builed ALL their users on a .com and .net or cctld extentions, Any new extentions will definatly have a very uphill struggle on their hands.

the problem was so big with .info they had to offer free ones till people Finally started to take notice, if you look at the registration trend before the free offer and AFTER the free offer was over you will see it succeeded alot! the only other extention i can see that work with is .web (general extention) the res, even if you get it free you will have a hard time finding something that actually fits it!

Not so sure, I thought TLDs are supposed to group similiar sites together?
.web would be everything so implies no distinctive grouping to the user/surfer.
